Chapter 8 - NEW ROOTS: DAWN OVER THE AUSTIN HILL COUNTRY

Three months after the night that changed our lives forever, the autumn breeze carried the gentle scent of blooming jasmine across the back porch of my family’s historical Austin bungalow.

The legal battles were entirely behind us. Mark and Evelyn were awaiting federal trial behind bars with zero chance of bail or release, facing multiple consecutive life sentences for murder, fraud, and conspiracy. Their names had been thoroughly scrubbed from our lives, our records, and our future.

Standing on the back porch with a warm mug of herbal tea—brewed carefully by my own hands from ingredients I personally purchased and inspected—I watched Noah kick a soccer ball across the lush green lawn, laughing brightly as our newly adopted rescue dog chased after it.

The trauma of what we had survived didn't vanish overnight. There were still nights when minor noises in the hallway made my heart skip a beat, moments when the memory of that Sunday dinner tea flashed sharply behind my eyelids. But healing wasn't about forgetting the poison; it was about reclaiming the space where the poison tried to take root.

Noah ran up the porch steps, panting slightly, his face flushed with healthy childhood energy. He stopped in front of me, looking up with a proud, confident grin.

"Mom, do you want to kick the ball around before dinner?" he asked.

I smiled down at my son—my protector, my hero, my brilliant boy who had saved my life with three brave words whispered under a dining room table.

"You're on, sweetie," I said, setting my mug safely on the wooden patio table, and running down the steps to join him in the golden Texas sun.
