Chapter 8 - Blood in the Snowbank

“Down!” Victor roared, drawing his custom 9mm from beneath his coat while crawling toward the diner’s kitchen swing door.

The thunderous roar of automatic rifles tore the quiet midwestern diner into an abattoir of flying plaster and shattered glass.

From the front parking lot, through the swirling curtain of blinding snow, Victor caught the silhouette of four heavily armed men.

They were moving in a disciplined, military formation, wearing tactical winter gear and night-vision scopes.

These were not street thugs or opportunistic carjackers.

These were Moretti’s primary contract killers—the wet-work crew known throughout the Midwest as the Iron River Group.

They hadn't just followed Julian Vance; they had used Victor’s own Suburban to pinpoint the location.

Sylvia’s tracking software had done its job with terrifying efficiency.

A heavy thud sounded at the rear kitchen exit as Dante kicked the service door open, a submachine gun already barking in his heavy hands.

Dante laid down a suppressive sweep of fire through the kitchen pantry, driving back two shooters attempting to flank through the loading dock.

“Boss!” Dante yelled over the deafening crackle of gunfire, blood dripping from a deep graze along his left temple. “They’ve got the perimeter boxed!”

“They’ve got three vehicles out front and heavy armor on the road!”

Victor fired three calculated shots through the shattered diner window, dropping the lead shooter who was advancing past the diesel pumps.

The man collapsed face-first into the freezing slush, his rifle clattering across the ice.

Julian crawled up beside Victor, his face pale but his hands steady.

“The basement,” Julian shouted over the chaos, pointing toward a heavy steel hatch set into the floor behind the commercial fryers.

“This place was built on an old dairy storage network from the nineteen-twenties.”

“There’s a concrete drainage tunnel that runs two hundred yards east under County Road H to an abandoned equipment shed.”

Victor looked at Julian, seeing not a rival or an academic, but an engineer who had mapped every inch of his escape corridor beforehand.

“Dante!” Victor commanded, firing two more rounds to keep the remaining riflemen pinned behind a snowbank. “Get the hatch open!”

Dante lunged toward the steel ring on the floor, wrenching the heavy hatch upward with a metallic shriek.

A cold, damp smell of wet stone and stagnant earth rushed up to meet them.

A grenade arced through the shattered front window, bouncing heavily across the diner’s linoleum floor toward their position.

Victor didn't hesitate.

He shoved Julian headfirst down the dark opening of the hatch, grabbed Dante by the tactical vest, and threw his lieutenant into the hole.

Victor dove in after them, his boots clearing the rim just as the explosive detonated above.

The shockwave blew the heavy steel hatch shut with the force of a thunderclap, raining pulverized mortar and concrete dust down upon their heads.

The darkness in the tunnel was absolute, broken only by the thin, trembling beam of Dante’s weapon-mounted tactical light.

Up above, the muffled explosions of Moretti’s men detonating the propane tanks of the diner shook the foundation of the earth.

Victor sat up in the freezing mud, wiping a smear of blood and gunpowder from his forehead.

He turned his gaze toward Julian Vance, who was coughing heavily in the damp air.

“You planned an underground evacuation route for an accidental ambush?” Victor asked, the disbelief evident in his voice.

“I planned for every scenario where your arrogance brought an army down upon Nora’s head,” Julian shot back, standing up and dusting off his torn canvas coat.

“Now move, Victor.”

“Because Moretti isn’t just looking for you anymore.”

“If he realizes Nora isn’t here, his secondary sweep teams will execute every newborn in that medical convoy before they reach the Mississippi.”
