Chapter 13 - The Restitution Of Mrs. Gable

Two weeks after the federal grand jury hearing, a white sedan pulled into our driveway, carrying an unexpected visitor.
I was out on the front lawn checking the sprinkler system when an elderly woman with silver-white hair stepped out of the passenger seat, supported by a younger woman in her thirties.
As they walked up the driveway, I recognized the face immediately from the criminal files Special Agent Torres had shared with me.
It was Mrs. Gable—the eighty-two-year-old retired schoolteacher living three blocks over who had been victimized by the exact same Horizon Asset Holdings scheme.
I walked over to meet them, wiping my hands on a shop towel.
“Hello, young man,” Mrs. Gable said, her voice shaking slightly with emotion as she looked up at my uniform shirt.
“Are you Sergeant Daniel Vance?”
“Yes, ma'am, I am,” I replied respectfully, stepping closer to offer an arm if she needed balance.
“I’m Mrs. Gable’s daughter, Sarah,” the younger woman explained, stepping forward with tears shining in her eyes.
“Agent Torres told us everything about how your investigation into Horizon Asset Holdings blew open the entire regional syndicate.”
“If you hadn't recorded those phone calls and preserved those corporate records, the courts never would have frozen the accounts that stole my mother’s home,” Sarah said, her voice breaking.
“They had already forged the deed transfer to a shell company, and mom was two weeks away from being forcibly moved into a low-grade state facility.”
Mrs. Gable reached out, taking my calloused hand in both of hers and pressing her palms against my knuckles with deep gratitude.
“You saved my home, Sergeant Vance,” the elderly teacher whispered, her eyes brimming with tears.
“Just like you saved your own mother from those wicked people.”
“I just did what any investigator with a conscience would do, Mrs. Gable,” I said gently, guiding them toward the porch where my mother had stood up to welcome our guests.
Mom walked down the steps with open arms, meeting Mrs. Gable halfway across the concrete path.
“Eleanor!” Mrs. Gable cried out, embracing her old friend in a warm, tearful hug.
“I heard what happened to you... those monsters tried to do the exact same thing to both of us!”
“They tried, Margaret,” Mom smiled, pulling her close.
“But my boy came home from the war just in time to stop them dead in their tracks.”
We spent the entire afternoon sitting together on the back patio, drinking iced tea out of crystal glasses while the two elderly women shared stories of survival, resilience, and neighborhood memories.

Watching them laugh together in the golden autumn sunshine, I knew that every hour spent organizing those encrypted audio files and tracking offshore wire transfers had been worth it.
The syndicate was dismantled, the victims were getting their homes back, and justice was finally taking its course.
