Chapter 10 - The Return to the Victorian Homestead: Sweeping for Hidden Surveillance

With the primary co-conspirators, corrupt attorneys, and inside administrative moles all safely locked behind federal bars, the time had finally come to bring my seventy-two-year-old father back to the historic Victorian home he had built with his own two hands. Before allowing him to step foot across the threshold, however, my federal tactical security detail executed a comprehensive, military-grade sweep of the entire estate to ensure absolute safety.
Standing in the grand foyer of the sprawling Victorian house, I watched as my technical specialists deployed specialized radio-frequency detectors, thermal imaging scanners, and optical lens locators across every room to sniff out hidden bugs, listening devices, or covert cameras left behind by Vanessa’s operatives.
“Clear in the formal dining room, Agent Vance—no active RF transmitters or hidden pinhole lenses detected in the crown molding or antique light fixtures,” my lead tech specialist reported over the encrypted comms headset, stepping out of the parlor with his gear packed neatly in his Pelican case.
“Check the master study bookshelf where Dad kept his personal safe and financial ledgers,” I instructed, keeping a watchful eye on the perimeter as the team methodically combed through every square inch of the sprawling residence.
A few minutes later, my senior technical officer emerged from the study carrying a small, sophisticated wireless audio transmitter disguised as a decorative brass bookend sitting directly on my father’s oak writing desk.
“Bingo, Agent Vance—we found a live, battery-backed acoustic transmitter wired directly into the local cellular relay network, transmitting every conversation in this room straight to Vanessa’s smartphone in real time,” the tech specialist reported, holding up the bug with insulated tweezers.
My blood boiled at the thought of those two parasites invading my father’s most intimate sanctuary, listening in on his private moments and plotting his psychological destruction from afar while he tried to enjoy his retirement in peace.
“Smash it into pieces, bag the fragments for evidentiary logging, and sweep the exterior perimeter twice to make sure there are no remote trail cams hidden in the oak trees overlooking the driveway,” I commanded, my voice laced with cold, unyielding authority.

Once the final security sweep was completed and certified 100% secure, I drove down to the temporary county safe house where Dad had been staying under federal protection, personally escorting him back to the home he thought he had lost forever. As my unmarked federal sedan turned down the familiar oak-lined driveway of the Victorian estate, Dad looked out the passenger window, his eyes shining with unshed tears of profound relief and quiet joy.
“Welcome home, Dad,” I said softly, killing the engine and walking around to open his door, offering him a steady, supportive hand to guide him up the polished stone steps.
