Chapter 8 - A New Heart, A New Legacy

Six months later, the sun shone brightly through the windows of St. Jude Medical Center.
Lucas Bennett walked down the familiar white corridors, but he wasn't wearing his standard blue orderly scrubs. He wore a crisp button-down shirt and a calm, genuine smile.
He pushed open the door to Room 412.
Sitting up in bed was a teenage girl with bright, hopeful eyes. Her skin, once pale and tinged with blue from oxygen deprivation, was now flush with healthy, vibrant color.
“Hey, Chloe,” Lucas said softly, sitting beside her bed.
“Hey, big brother,” she beamed. “The doctor said I get to go home on Tuesday! He said the new valve is working perfectly.”
Lucas squeezed her hand, fighting back tears of gratitude. The $2.4 million surgery had been a complete success. For the first time in her life, Chloe had a normal, healthy heart.
“That’s amazing, kiddo,” Lucas whispered.
After visiting his sister, Lucas took the elevator up to the hospital’s executive offices. As the executor of the Mercer Charitable Medical Trust, he had work to do.
The $82 million estate was actively paying off the medical debt of dozens of low-income families whose children were battling severe illnesses. Lucas had quit his grueling night shifts and dedicated his life full-time to running the foundation.
Later that afternoon, he received a phone call from Arthur Vance.
“Good news, Lucas,” the lawyer’s gruff voice came through the speaker. “The jury just returned a verdict. Guilty on all counts for both of them. Victoria is looking at life without the possibility of parole.”
“And Raymond?” Lucas asked.
“Same deal,” Arthur chuckled. “Turns out, juries don't like it when you poison a dying man for his money.”
Lucas leaned back in his office chair, looking at a framed photograph on his desk. It was a picture of Jonathan Mercer, taken years before he fell ill.
“Thank you, Mr. Mercer,” Lucas whispered to the empty room.
