Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

By noon, the hospital room felt like a pressure cooker. Vanessa and Evan were brought into my room by a uniformed officer, ostensibly to "check on my recovery" before the detectives took their official statements. The moment the door clicked shut, the facade dropped entirely.

“You were supposed to die,” my sister whispered fiercely, stepping toward my bed, her eyes blazing with a hatred so pure it took my breath away.

Behind her, the door opened again. Detective Miller stepped in, followed by his partner. They stood silently by the door. Evan didn't notice them. He was staring at his phone, which displayed a PDF of his signature beneath every page of the debt guarantee.

“She tricked me!” Evan shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. He pointed a trembling finger at Vanessa. "She told me it was wedding money! Now I owe a hundred and fifty grand to some ghost company!"

I locked the brakes on my spare hospital wheelchair, sitting up straight despite the agonizing pain in my ribs. I looked at the two people who had stolen my legs, drained my bank accounts, and planned my murder, and I smiled. It was a cold, devastating smile.

“No,” I said, my voice echoing clearly in the silent room. “You both signed your own downfall. You thought you could use my love for you as a weapon, Vanessa. You thought my disability made me blind and stupid, Evan. But all it did was give me the time to build a cage for you both.”

Evan lunged toward me, his fists raised, but Detective Miller intercepted him, slamming him against the wall. "Evan Hartwell, you're under arrest for attempted murder and insurance fraud."

Vanessa shrieked, backing away. "You can't prove anything! It's her word against ours! We didn't push her!"

"Actually," a deep, smooth voice said from the hallway.

The loan shark, Victor Sloane, stepped through the doorway. He was wearing a sharp, custom-tailored suit. He casually unbuttoned his collar, revealing the small black microphone of a federal wire taped to his chest.

"I've been cooperating with the feds on a few... restructuring deals," Sloane said with a charming, lethal smile. "Turns out, when Evan here panicked an hour ago, he called my office trying to threaten his way out of the contract. He admitted on a recorded, federally monitored line that he pushed you down the stairs because he 'wasn't going to pay a cripple's debts.' Oops."

Vanessa collapsed onto the linoleum floor, her white silk robe dirty and crumpled, finally realizing that the game was over.
