Chapter 1 - The Innocent Ritual and the White Pill

“I’ll wash your feet, and then you’ll be able to walk again.” The three-year-old daughter of the housekeeper stood in front of Massimo Rinaldi, the feared head of the Rinaldi family. In her tiny hands, she held a small plastic basin filled with warm water. The moment she spoke, stifled laughter erupted throughout the grand living room of the mansion. The most respected doctors in the world had already confirmed that Massimo would never walk again after the Bellandi family’s brutal ambush six months earlier. His spine was severely damaged. His legs were entirely lifeless. But instead of laughing like the others, Massimo quietly extended his feet toward the little girl. He had no idea that this simple, innocent moment would eventually save his life from a deadly plan being carried out by the person he trusted more than anyone.

Autumn was settling over Long Island. The sun was disappearing behind the perfectly trimmed hedges surrounding the Rinaldi estate. Warm golden light streamed through the enormous library windows, reflecting across the polished marble floor. Six months had passed since the violent attack on Brooklyn Avenue. Since that day, the once-bustling mansion had become increasingly quiet, heavy with the weight of impending doom. At thirty-eight years old, Massimo Rinaldi remained the most powerful mafia boss on the East Coast. He was the third generation to lead the Rinaldi empire. His sharp features, cold gray eyes, and neatly slicked-back black hair gave him a fiercely intimidating presence. Even confined to his wheelchair, he always dressed impeccably, usually wearing a perfectly tailored black vest. But beneath that controlled, iron exterior was a man who had slowly stopped believing that his future could ever change.

He had entrusted much of the family operation to Dean Foster, his loyal right-hand man of twelve years. Dean had earned Massimo’s absolute confidence after apparently saving his life during the ambush. Massimo was also preparing to marry Camille Ashwood, a woman of high society. Although the upcoming wedding felt less like a new beginning and more like another surrender to a life he no longer wanted. The ambush had happened on an ordinary Tuesday. Massimo’s convoy had been traveling across Brooklyn Avenue toward a routine meeting when three vehicles suddenly surrounded them. Automatic gunfire erupted, shattering the bulletproof glass. One bullet struck Massimo’s lower spine before his security team could even return fire. The attack should have killed him instantly. He survived only because Dean had thrown himself across the seat, taking two bullets that had been intended for Massimo’s chest. Everyone considered Dean a hero. For six months, that apparent act of sacrifice had become the strongest foundation of Massimo’s absolute trust. He never considered that the same person who had supposedly saved him might have been involved in arranging the attack in the first place.

That afternoon, Carla Bennett quietly entered the library carrying a folded linen towel. At twenty-eight, she had worked as the Rinaldi family’s head housekeeper for almost two years. She was small and slender, with brown hair usually tied neatly behind her head, and hands roughened by years of hard work. After losing her husband in a terrible construction accident when Nina was only one, Carla had devoted everything to raising her daughter. She wore a simple gray maid uniform and usually kept her gaze lowered whenever members of the Rinaldi family passed by. But Nina was different. Tiny footsteps echoed across the marble floor behind her mother. Nina Bennett appeared in the doorway wearing a soft cotton dress. Her curly brown hair bounced around her face as she walked, completely untouched by the dangerous world surrounding her. To Nina, the terrifying mafia boss was simply “Uncle Massimo.” Every afternoon, she brought a small basin of warm water and performed the same ritual.

From the doorway, Camille watched with clear disgust, crossing her elegant arms. Dean gave a quiet laugh while slowly swirling his expensive whiskey. “Looks like we have the youngest doctor in the world,” Dean mocked. Nobody took the child seriously. Nobody except Massimo, who found a strange peace in the child's pure intentions. Nearby, Dr. Julian Hale finished his daily examination and began gathering his medical equipment. He checked his gold watch before heading toward the hallway. He never noticed the small white pill that slipped from his coat pocket and landed silently on the crimson carpet. But Nina noticed. Her tiny eyes followed the pill as it fell. She walked over, picked it up, and studied it with innocent curiosity. Then, thinking it was a piece of candy, she slipped it carefully into the pocket of her dress. No one else in the mansion saw what had happened. And that single, unseen moment was about to change the fate of the Rinaldi empire forever.
