Chapter 10 - A New Empire

Three months later. The winter snow was falling gently over the Rinaldi estate, covering the gardens in a pristine white blanket. The mansion was no longer a place of dark whispers and treachery. It was filled with light, warmth, and the sound of a child's laughter. Massimo had cleaned house. Anyone loyal to Dean was gone. He had also stepped back from the most violent aspects of the mafia, transitioning the family's massive wealth into legitimate real estate and shipping businesses. He didn't need the blood anymore. He had found something worth living for. In the grand library, a fire crackled warmly in the fireplace. Massimo sat on the large leather sofa, completely healthy. He wasn't reading financial reports or planning hits. Instead, he was sitting on the floor, building a massive Lego castle.
"Uncle Massimo, the dragon goes on top!" Nina demanded, pointing her tiny finger at a green plastic dragon. "Are you sure, Dr. Nina?" Massimo chuckled, his eyes crinkling with genuine happiness. "I think the dragon belongs in the moat." "No! On top!" she giggled, climbing onto his strong back. Massimo laughed, a deep, rumbling sound that filled the room. The library doors opened, and Carla walked in. She was no longer wearing a gray maid's uniform. She wore a beautiful, simple emerald green dress that hugged her curves. A delicate diamond necklace rested on her collarbone—a gift from Massimo. She carried a tray with hot cocoa, but she wasn't serving it as a servant. She was bringing it for her family.
Massimo looked up, and his breath caught in his throat, just as it did every time he saw her. He stood up effortlessly, walking over to take the tray from her hands. He set it on the table and pulled Carla into his arms, kissing her softly. "You look beautiful," he murmured against her lips. Carla smiled, resting her head against his broad chest. "And you look like you're losing a fight with a three-year-old over a Lego dragon." "She's a tough negotiator," Massimo smiled, wrapping his arms securely around the woman who had saved his life. He looked over at Nina, who was happily placing the dragon on top of the castle. Then he looked down at Carla, the bravest woman he had ever known. The finest doctors in the world had told him his life was over. But they were wrong. Thanks to a little girl with a basin of water, and a mother with a heart of gold, Massimo Rinaldi hadn't just learned to walk again. He had finally learned how to live.
