Chapter 7 - Unleashing the Boss

The ambush lasted less than three minutes.
By the time the police sirens echoed in the distance, the Romano hitmen were either incapacitated or fleeing.
Alejandro got back into the SUV, his suit dusted with broken glass, breathing heavily.
“Drive,” he barked at Silas.
We didn’t go to the clinic. We went back to the fortress.
That night, the mansion felt different.
It felt like a war room.
Men in dark suits flooded the corridors. Maps and blueprints were spread across the dining table.
I sat on the stairs, hugging my stuffed rabbit, watching Alejandro issue orders.
He looked terrifying.
The soft man who played chess with me was gone.
The Mafia Boss was back.
“They crossed the line,” Alejandro told his captains, his voice echoing in the grand hall.
“They targeted a child. They targeted my family.”
It was the first time he used that word.
Family.
My mother was standing in the doorway, listening.
Alejandro saw her and paused the meeting.
He walked over to her, ignoring the dozens of dangerous men watching them.
“Pack a bag for you and Emma. Silas is taking you to a safe house in the mountains.”
“What about you?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“I have a mess to clean up.”
“Alejandro… don’t do this. Don’t start a war.”
He reached out, gently touching her cheek.
“The war started the night they poisoned me, Maria. I’m just finishing it.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I’ll come for you when it’s over. I promise.”
I ran down the stairs and hugged his leg.
“Don’t get hurt, Mr. Moretti.”
May you like
He knelt down and hugged me tightly.
“Call me Alejandro, kid. And I won’t. I have too much to come back to.”
