Chapter 6 - Aftermath and Allied Blood

Dawn broke over the Pacific, washing the blood-stained courtyard of the Ferraro estate in pale, golden light. Medical technicians and cleanup crews moved with silent efficiency, hauling away the remnants of the midnight raid under the watchful eyes of Dante’s surviving enforcers. Inside the master study, the air smelled of ozone, gun oil, and expensive bourbon.

Dante sat behind a massive mahogany desk, his left arm bound tightly beneath his shirt with professional medical gauze, staring at an open ledger filled with encrypted asset transfers. Sera stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the ocean waves crash against the rocks far below. The twins were sleeping soundly upstairs, finally accustomed to the secure, peaceful rhythm of their new nursery.

You can leave, Dante said without looking up, his voice flat and detached. The contract had a severance clause. If things got too dangerous, you were free to walk away with fifty thousand dollars and a clean slate. I’m not leaving, Dante, she said, turning around to face him. Not because of the contract. And not because of the money.

Then why? He finally looked up, his dark eyes searching hers for a trace of hesitation or fear. Because those boys need someone who won't flinch when the world gets ugly. And because you need someone who won't let you drown in your own darkness.

He stood up slowly, wincing slightly as his injured shoulder pulled against the stitches. He walked across the room, stopping just inches from her, towering over her with an intensity that made the air feel electric. My uncle is dead, Dante said quietly. His inner circle tried to execute a coup and paid for it. The syndicate is mine, completely and unconditionally now. Which means there are no more threats hiding in the shadows. The house is safe.

Then why do you look like you’ve lost a war? Because victory with blood on your hands tastes like ash, Sera. He reached out, gently taking her hand, interlacing his fingers with hers. For the first time in my life, I have something worth protecting. And it terrifies me to my core.

She squeezed his hand back, her thumb brushing over the rough calluses of his palm. Then stop fighting it, she whispered. Let yourself have a home.

Before he could answer, a sharp knock at the study door interrupted them. Marco, Dante’s most trusted captain, stepped inside, looking grim. Boss, we secured Salvatore’s terminal. There’s encrypted communication logs pointing to a federal handler in the Department of Justice. Someone inside the government was selling our security routes to your uncle.

Dante’s eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits. Find out who it is, he ordered, his voice dropping into the icy register of a syndicate kingpin. I want their name, their address, and every asset they own on my desk by tonight. We’re going to clean house from the top down. Marco nodded and withdrew, leaving them alone once more.

May you like

Dante turned back to Sera, the harshness of the syndicate world melting away as he looked down into her eyes. You see? he said bitterly. It never ends. The violence just takes on a different suit. But you’re not fighting alone anymore, she reminded him, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. We’re a team, Dante. Remember?

A slow, genuine smile—rare, fierce, and breathtaking—spread across his face. Yeah, he murmured, pulling her gently against his uninjured side. A team.
