Chapter 8 - Resurrection and Ruin

The heavy oak front doors swung open with a slow, solemn creak. Dante stood in the center of the grand foyer, his posture rigid as stone, his hands balled into tight fists at his sides. Sera stood a few paces behind him, her heart hammering against her ribs, acutely aware of the historical weight shifting in the room.

Elena walked in, her footsteps echoing hollowly across the marble floor. She looked older, thinner, the vibrant spark in her eyes replaced by a haunted, defensive wariness. Her trench coat was damp from the coastal mist, and she clutched a worn leather handbag against her chest like a shield. Dante, she whispered, her voice trembling as she stopped ten feet away from him.

You’re alive, Dante said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, devoid of joy, relief, or warmth—filled only with a crushing, incomprehensible void. They told me you were dead. The car was incinerated. The DNA match from the dental records was positive.

I had to let them think I was dead, Elena said, tears spilling over her lashes as she took a half-step forward. Salvatore... he found out about the pregnancy before the twins were born. He told me if I didn't disappear, he would kill you and make sure my babies never drew a single breath. He staged the crash with a decoy body to trap me in hiding overseas while he seized control of the family assets. I couldn't come back until I knew he was gone.

And now he is, Dante said, his voice like crushed ice. My uncle is dead, Elena. His whole crew was wiped out two weeks ago. Because of me. Because of this house. Elena’s gaze flicked past Dante, finally landing on Sera standing by the doorway. She frowned, a mix of confusion and sudden territorial panic flashing across her exhausted features. Who is she? What is she doing in my home? With my children?

She’s their caregiver, Dante said flatly, not moving an inch. She brought them back from the brink of death when nobody else could—when the specialists you left behind abandoned them to withdrawal and terror.

Elena’s face hardened, the vulnerability instantly replaced by maternal fury. You hired a stranger to raise my babies? While I was hiding in safehouses, running for my life, you replaced me with a nanny? I didn't replace you, Elena, Dante snapped, his voice finally rising, cracking with four months of unspent rage and agony. I mourned you! I tore apart half the eastern seaboard looking for your killers while raising two traumatized infants who cried twenty hours a day because they could feel my rage! You didn't just disappear—you let me believe I had failed them completely!

Elena flinched, stepping back as the brutal truth of his words washed over her. She looked around the grand, terrifying foyer, then at Dante, and finally back to Sera, who stood quietly in the background, feeling like an absolute ghost in a tragedy that didn't belong to her.

Upstairs, a faint, high-pitched wail echoed down the hallway. Nico had woken up. Without a word, Sera turned around and walked up the grand staircase, leaving the two ghosts of the past to tear each other apart in the ruins of their history.
