Chapter 2 - The Secret Beyond the Grave

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The security guards had arrived, standing at the doorway, waiting for my command. Victoria was panting, a triumphant sneer returning to her face as she looked between me and Grace. I turned to the nanny, expecting her to look guilty or defensive. Instead, Grace remained perfectly calm. She gently urged Noah to stand behind her, then reached into the pocket of her simple gray cardigan. Slowly, her fingers produced a small, ornate silver key.
"She's right, Mr. Sterling. I was in your late wife’s room," Grace admitted, her voice steady. "But I wasn't searching it for myself. I found this key sewn deep inside the lining of Noah’s favorite baby blanket. The blanket he takes everywhere. I noticed the stitching had recently been cut and hastily repaired. I followed my instincts." I stared at the key. It belonged to the antique mahogany desk in Sarah’s bedroom—a desk I hadn't been able to bring myself to open since she passed away two years ago from a sudden, aggressive illness.
"Take her away," I ordered the guards, not taking my eyes off the key. Victoria screamed and cursed, her elegant façade completely shattered as the men dragged her down the hallway. Once her voice faded, I took the key from Grace. "Show me," I said. We walked in silence to Sarah’s untouched bedroom, the air still faintly smelling of her lavender perfume. I slid the silver key into the locked bottom drawer of the desk. It turned with a heavy click.
Inside the drawer, nestled beneath a stack of old letters, was a thick manila folder containing bank records and a sleek, silver USB drive. My hands trembled as I plugged the drive into my laptop. A video file popped up, simply titled: For Daniel. I clicked play. The screen flickered, and suddenly, my late wife’s face appeared. She looked pale, exhausted from the treatments, but her eyes were fiercely determined. It had been recorded just two days before she died.
"Daniel," Sarah’s voice filled the room, bringing tears to my eyes instantly. "If you are watching this, it means I am gone, and Victoria has already entered our lives." My blood ran freezing cold. How could she know? I firmly believed I had met Victoria completely by chance at a charity gala nearly a year after Sarah’s death.
The recording continued, pulling the rug out from under my entire reality. "You think your meeting was a coincidence, but it wasn't. Victoria worked for your brother, Marcus, for three years under her maiden name, Victoria Vance. They have been having an affair. But worse than that, they have a plan. They are planning to make her your wife, and eventually, Noah’s legal guardian. Daniel, your brother's investment firm is drowning in secret debt. If something happens to you, or if you are deemed unfit, they will control Noah’s massive trust fund together."

I couldn't breathe. My younger brother? The man I grew up protecting? The man scheduled to stand beside me as my best man in exactly six days? I gripped the edge of the desk, my knuckles turning white. Victoria hadn't just been a cruel stepmother-in-waiting; she was a planted operative in my own home, a parasite brought in by my own flesh and blood.
"I couldn't tell you without solid proof, and Marcus was monitoring my emails," Sarah’s video explained. "But I found the paper trail. It's all in the folder. Please, Daniel. Protect our boy. Trust Grace. I hired her through an underground agency specifically to watch over Noah when I knew my time was short. She knows everything. I love you both." The screen faded to black. I sat in the silent room, the magnitude of the betrayal crushing the breath from my lungs. My brother and my fiancée had orchestrated a masterclass in deception, all to steal my son's future.
