Chapter 3 - The Brother's Betrayal

I didn't sleep that night. I sat in my study, the heavy oak doors locked from the inside, surrounded by the documents Sarah had hidden. As I combed through the bank records, the horrifying picture became crystal clear. Marcus had lost tens of millions in offshore real estate gambles. To cover his tracks and avoid federal prison for embezzling from his own clients, he needed a massive injection of untraceable capital. Noah’s trust fund—a multi-billion dollar estate left by my grandfather—was the perfect target. But the trust was ironclad. Only Noah could access it when he turned twenty-five, or his legal guardians could authorize emergency withdrawals if it was deemed necessary for the child's survival and well-being.

Suddenly, a knock on the study door broke my concentration. It was Grace. She brought a tray with black coffee and sat quietly across from me. "Noah is asleep," she said softly. "The house is secure." I looked at her, really looking at her for the first time. She wasn't just a nanny. She was a silent guardian my wife had placed in the trenches. "Sarah hired you?" I asked, my voice hoarse.

Grace nodded. "My background is in child protection and private security. Your wife realized Marcus was digging into your family's medical histories. She noticed Victoria lingering around your company’s events months before you officially 'met.' Sarah knew she was dying, and she knew Marcus would strike when you were blinded by grief. My job was to keep Noah safe until Marcus made a mistake."

And they had made a mistake. I opened the final document in the folder. It was a copy of a legal petition, drafted but hidden away, claiming that I, Daniel Sterling, was emotionally unstable, prone to violent outbursts, and suffering from severe complicated grief disorder. The petition aimed to declare me mentally unfit to raise my son. The primary witness who signed the affidavit? My brother, Marcus. The medical professional who had supposedly evaluated me and provided "confidential details"? A fake psychiatrist hired by Victoria.

They weren't just going to marry me for money. They were going to marry me, stage a mental breakdown, lock me in a psychiatric facility, and take total control of my son and his wealth. Fury, white-hot and blinding, surged through my veins. The betrayal was so profound it transcended anger; it became a cold, calculating desire for absolute destruction. I wasn't just going to cancel the wedding. I was going to ruin them.

My phone buzzed on the desk. The caller ID flashed Marcus - Best Man. I took a deep breath, smoothing my expression even though he couldn't see me, and answered the call. "Dan! Hey brother!" Marcus’s overly cheerful voice poured through the speaker. "Victoria called me in hysterics. She said you guys had a massive fight and you kicked her out? Come on, man, wedding jitters are normal. Let me come over and we can talk this out over a scotch."

"No," I kept my voice perfectly level, mimicking the tired, stressed-out groom he expected me to be. "It's fine, Marcus. We just had a disagreement about the nanny. Victoria overreacted. I sent her to a hotel to cool off. We’ll sort it out tomorrow."

"Oh, thank god," Marcus let out a theatrical sigh of relief. "You scared me, man. You know I just want you to be happy. You've been through so much. I've always got your back, Dan. Always." The hypocrisy made me physically nauseous. "I know you do, Marcus," I replied quietly. "See you at the office on Monday." I hung up the phone and looked at Grace. The battle lines were drawn. It was time to set the trap.
