Chapter 2 - The Illusion of Grandeur

The morning after my departure, the sun rose over a city that no longer felt like a cage.

For Dominic, however, the sunrise brought the beginning of the end.

He had barely slept, pacing the length of his lavish bedroom while Paige complained about the noise.

His mind was reeling from the doctor's words. Infertile. No heir. No legacy.

And Audrey was gone. Just vanished.

But his ego was still intact, shielded by the millions he thought he possessed.

He dressed in his bespoke Italian suit, adjusting his silk tie with shaking hands.

"Don't worry about her," Victoria had told him over breakfast, sipping her Earl Grey tea.

"Audrey has no money, no family, and nowhere to go. She'll be back by dinner, begging for forgiveness."

Dominic nodded, wanting desperately to believe his mother's delusion.

He kissed Paige goodbye, ignoring the hollow feeling in his chest, and drove to his corporate headquarters.

He pulled his sleek black sports car into his reserved VIP parking spot.

He walked to the private elevator and swiped his keycard.

A red light flashed. Access Denied.

Frowning, he swiped it again. Access Denied.

“Damn machine,” he muttered, walking over to the main security desk.

“Frank, my card isn’t working. Fix it.”

The security guard looked up, his expression a mix of pity and discomfort.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Vance. I received orders from the board this morning.”

“Orders? What orders? I am the CEO!” Dominic barked, his face flushing with anger.

“My orders were to revoke your building access, sir. You need to speak with the CFO.”

Before Dominic could unleash his fury, his phone began to ring incessantly.

It was Marcus, his Chief Financial Officer.

“Dominic, where the hell are you?” Marcus yelled, panic dripping from his voice.

“I’m in the lobby! The idiot guards blocked my card!”

“Listen to me very carefully,” Marcus said, his breath hitching.

“The accounts are frozen. All of them.”

Dominic stopped breathing. “What do you mean, frozen?”

“Apex Holdings. The majority shareholder. They pulled the plug at 8:00 AM.”

“They can’t do that! We have a contract!”

“They activated a breach-of-trust clause, Dominic. They’re foreclosing on our operational loans.”

“Who the hell runs Apex Holdings? Get them on the phone!”

“I don’t know! The only contact we have is a law firm: Sterling & Associates.”

Dominic’s stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

Sophia Sterling. Audrey’s pro-bono lawyer. The one Victoria always mocked.

Suddenly, a second call beeped through on call waiting. It was Victoria.

Dominic switched the line, his hand sweating against the phone case.

“Dominic!” Victoria shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattered.

“There are men in suits at the front door! They have police officers with them!”

“Mom, calm down. What is happening?”

“They’re handing me an eviction notice! They said the lease on the house has been terminated!”

“We don’t lease the house, Mom. We own it.”

“That’s what I told them! But they showed me a deed. It’s owned by Apex Holdings!”

Dominic leaned against the cold marble wall of the lobby, feeling his legs give out.

The car he drove. The house they lived in. The company he ran.

All of it tied back to one invisible entity that had propped him up for two years.

Apex Holdings.

He hung up the phone, the world spinning violently around him.

He frantically typed Audrey’s number, but the line was completely disconnected.

He tried to log into his personal bank accounts to transfer emergency funds.

Account Locked. Please Contact Your Branch.

In less than twenty-four hours, the empire Dominic and Victoria had used to crush my spirit had evaporated.

They were left standing in the ashes of their own arrogance.

And I hadn't even shown my face yet.
