Chapter 13 - The Inside Man and the Encryption Key

The interior of the avionics bay smelled of warm copper, ozone, and machine oil—the familiar olfactory signature of a complex modern flight deck resting just inches above my head.

I wedged my flashlight into a mounting bracket, pulled a miniature diagnostic laptop from my backpack, and patched its interface directly into the master data bus port of the flight control computer.

The screen immediately flickered to life, illuminating rows of scrolling hex code and encrypted system logs.

What I saw inside the memory banks made my blood run cold.

It wasn't a standard mechanical failure waiting to happen.

It was a sleek, military-grade logic bomb—a sophisticated piece of malicious firmware designed to mimic a routine sensor glitch during the aircraft's initial climb out of O'Hare, before triggering a cascading electrical surge that would permanently fry the primary flight control actuators at ten thousand feet.

The logic bomb was stamped with an unalterable digital signature: Vanguard Advanced Systems Division, Prototype 9-Alpha.

This wasn't just sabotage.

It was a remote-controlled execution timer, currently counting down toward zero.

Suddenly, the heavy metal access door of the hangar slammed open behind me, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots echoing across the concrete floor.

“Perimeter breach detected in Bay Four! Secure all exits!” a harsh voice bellowed over the hangar public address system.

They hadn't bought my cover story after all.

The line mechanic must have panicked and tripped the silent alarm the moment he reached the safety of the breakroom.

I frantically hit download on my diagnostic laptop, copying the entire logic bomb source code and the master encryption keys linking Director Vance directly to the Phoenix conspiracy straight onto my micro-SD card.

Download complete: 100%.

I yanked the data cable free just as heavy hands grabbed the edge of the avionics bay hatch and hauled it open with brutal force.

“Found her!” a Vanguard tactical operative roared, shining a high-intensity tactical flashlight straight into my eyes.

“Pull her out of the well!”

May you like

Before the operative could reach down to grab my jacket, I kicked my legs upward with explosive force, catching him squarely beneath the chin and sending him crashing backward onto the concrete floor.

I scrambled out of the access hatch, grabbed my backpack, and sprinted blindly toward the opposite side of the massive hangar, diving behind a rolling maintenance scaffolding just as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the sheet metal wall inches above my head.
