Chapter 14 - A Mid-Air Pursuit: Meridian Takes the Wheel

Sirens wailed across the sprawling tarmac of O'Hare as armored security vehicles converged on Maintenance Bay Four from all directions.
I didn't try to run across the open pavement.
Instead, I scrambled up the rolling maintenance staircase attached to the side of Flight 409, bypassed the locked boarding bridge, and used my emergency override key to force open the starboard overwing exit hatch of the commercial airliner.
I hauled myself inside the darkened cabin just as the final boarding passengers and congressional delegates began filing through the main forward doors, completely unaware that a high-stakes tactical manhunt was unfolding in the hangar beneath their feet.
Moving with disciplined, silent speed, I slipped past the galley curtains and slid unhindered through the open reinforced door of the flight deck.
The captain and first officer were busy conducting pre-flight systems checks, their backs turned toward me.
“Excuse me, gentlemen,” I said quietly, stepping onto the flight deck floor.
The captain whipped his head around in alarm, his hand flying to the interphone.
“What are you doing up here? This is a restricted—,” he started angrily.
I didn't let him finish.
I flashed my military-grade test pilot credentials and the open master diagnostic screen directly into his line of sight.
“Captain, your aircraft is currently rigged with an active Vanguard logic bomb programmed to disable your primary flight controls ten minutes after takeoff,” I stated with absolute, unshakeable authority.
“If you push the throttles forward right now without purging this corrupted firmware, every single person on this airframe will be dead before we cross the shoreline of Lake Michigan.”
The captain stared at me, his face pale and his eyes wide with shock.
“Who the hell are you?” he whispered.
“My name is Rachel Vale,” I replied, sliding into the jump seat behind the center pedestal.
“And if you want to see your families tonight, you are going to let me patch this master override code into your flight management computer right this second.”
Before the captain could utter a single word of protest, the first officer looked down at his primary Multi-Function Display, his face draining of all color.
“Captain... look at the auxiliary bus,” the first officer stammered, pointing a shaking finger at the screen.
“An unknown remote connection is attempting to execute a forced firmware update from an external Vanguard server.”
The countdown timer on the screen was flashing in angry crimson numbers: T-Minus 90 Seconds to System Lockout.
“Do it!” the captain roared, shoving his chair back to give me full access to the keyboard.
“Take the controls, Vale!”
My fingers flew across the keyboard with blinding speed, inputting the master cryptographic decryption key I had downloaded from the hangar bay.
Lines of green code cascaded down the screen, clashing against the malicious red malware in a high-stakes digital war for survival.

Flight control architecture secured.
Outside the windshield, the massive engines of Flight 409 spooled up to full takeoff thrust as the aircraft surged down the runway, lifting gracefully off the tarmac and punching straight through the morning fog toward the safety of the open sky.
