Chapter 4 - Grace's Mother

Arthur Vale appeared at the basement entrance with two men behind him.

He looked exactly the way he had at my father's funeral.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

A man who had built his life around making other people feel safe while he quietly moved their lives like pieces on a chessboard.

"Let them go," I said.

Arthur smiled.

"Who?"

"My family."

He looked toward Grace.

"Ah."

His expression changed.

"Mrs. Harper."

Grace pulled Mia closer.

Arthur's eyes settled on the child.

Then on Lily.

"The ledger?"

Grace shook her head.

"I don't know anything about a ledger."

Arthur sighed.

"You really do look like your mother."

Grace stared at him.

"You knew my mother."

"Of course."

"She trusted you."

"No."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"She feared me."

Elias stepped forward.

"You always were a coward."

Arthur looked at him.

"I thought you were stronger than this."

"I've been locked behind a wall for fourteen years."

"And yet you survived."

"Because you needed me alive."

Arthur's face tightened.

I noticed.

"Why?"

"Because Elias had the combination."

"What combination?"

"The ledger."

I turned to my uncle.

"What does that mean?"

Elias looked at Grace.

"It isn't a book."

Grace blinked.

"What?"

"The ledger is a list encoded into something else."

Arthur stepped forward.

"Enough."

Daniel moved in front of us.

One of Arthur's men raised a weapon.

Daniel raised his hand.

"Don't."

His voice carried the authority of a man who had spent half a century training others.

"You shoot in this house, every alarm in Beacon Hill brings police."

Arthur smiled.

"You still think rules matter."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He glanced at me.

"I know people matter."

Then he lunged.

The basement erupted into chaos.

I pulled Grace behind me.

A gunshot cracked.

The bullet struck a pipe.

Steam burst into the room.

Mia screamed.

I grabbed her and pushed her toward the tunnel.

"Go!"

Grace ran with Lily.

Elias followed.

Daniel and one of Arthur's men struggled near the stairs.

I tackled the second man.

He hit the floor.

Arthur disappeared.

Coward.

I got up.

"Where's Arthur?"

Daniel pointed.

"Tunnel."

We followed.

The passage split in two.

Elias shouted, "Left!"

I trusted him.

We reached the end.

A steel door slammed shut.

Arthur had escaped.

I kicked it.

Nothing.

Then I heard his voice.

"You should ask Grace about her mother's necklace."

I turned.

Grace went pale.

"My mother had a necklace."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

Arthur laughed from the other side.

"Of course you do."

Then silence.

We returned to the basement.

Grace sat on the floor, holding Lily.

Mia was crying quietly.

I crouched beside her.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded.

I waited.

"I was scared."

"I know."

"Is the bad man coming back?"

"Not tonight."

She looked at me.

"You promise?"

I hesitated.

Then I said, "Yes."

It was the first promise I had made in years that I meant with every part of myself.

Daniel helped us get upstairs.

Police arrived within minutes.

Arthur was gone.

So were his men.

But cameras had captured enough to prove an armed break-in.

The police took statements.

Grace refused to leave.

Elias stayed beside her.

At sunrise, my lawyer arrived.

He took one look at Elias and nearly fainted.

The news spread by noon.

The Duca heir's long-dead uncle was alive.

Reporters gathered outside the house.

Arthur disappeared completely.

Then I asked Grace about the necklace.

She sat at my kitchen table.

"My mother wore it every day."

"What did it look like?"

"A silver chain."

"Pendant?"

"A small blue stone."

I remembered something.

Mia had a necklace in a family photograph.

Same blue stone.

I pulled the image from the basement.

Grace stared.

"My mother gave it to me."

"Where is it?"

"I lost it."

Mia looked up.

"I know where it is."

We all turned.

"Where?"

"In my toy box."

Grace blinked.

"But I threw that necklace away."

"I found it."

Mia ran upstairs.

She returned with a tiny plastic box.

Inside was a blue stone pendant.

Elias stared at it.

"That's it."

Daniel took a small magnifying glass from his pocket.

"There are numbers engraved on the back."

I leaned closer.

There were four tiny digits.

1-9-8-7.

"Eighty-seven?" I asked.

Elias shook his head.

"No."

He turned the pendant over.

"Look again."

Under the numbers was a second marking.

A tiny letter.

H.

"H?"

Grace whispered.

"H for Harper."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

He looked at the stone.

"H for Harbor."

"What harbor?"

"Boston Harbor."

Arthur suddenly called my phone.

I answered.

"Leo."

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere your father never bothered to search."

"What do you want?"

"Your uncle."

"Why?"

"Because he knows where the evidence is."

"I have the pendant."

Silence.

Then Arthur said, "Then you have exactly twenty-four hours."

"For what?"

"To decide whether your inheritance is worth more than Grace Harper's life."

The call ended.

Grace stared at me.

"What did he mean?"

I didn't answer.

Because I had just realized something.

Arthur had not said "your life."

He had said Grace's.

That meant the threat was personal.

Not financial.

Not political.

Personal.

I picked up the pendant.

The blue stone felt warm from Mia's hand.

And engraved beneath the stone were four letters.

HARB.

Elias looked at it.

"That's not the code."

May you like

"What is it?"

He whispered, "It's a location."
