Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

By midnight, the house was locked down.

Every employee had been questioned.

Every camera reviewed.

Every access badge suspended.

Martin Reeves was missing.

Police issued a warrant.

Arthur remained hidden.

But we had something he didn't know about.

Anna had copied the full archive.

We also had a witness.

Grace's mother had left enough evidence to put Arthur in prison.

The problem was getting it to federal investigators without losing it.

Martin attacked first.

He sent a false statement accusing Grace of stealing confidential company records.

The story reached the media within hours.

Suddenly the internet said the housekeeper was a thief.

A disgruntled employee.

A woman manipulating my family.

Grace watched the reports in silence.

Mia heard them.

"Mommy isn't bad."

Grace hugged her.

"I know."

I turned off the television.

"This stops now."

Grace shook her head.

"You can't fight everyone."

"I'm not fighting everyone."

I looked at the screen.

"Just the people lying."

I held a press conference.

I showed the public the documents proving Grace had never stolen anything.

Then I said something that surprised everyone.

"I failed this family before I inherited it."

Reporters went silent.

"I assumed that because I was wealthy, the people around me were safe. I was wrong."

I named Arthur Vale.

I named Martin Reeves.

I explained the hidden room.

I explained what happened to my uncle.

And I told them about Grace's mother.

Within an hour, federal investigators opened a formal case.

Then Martin appeared.

He walked into the police station with his attorney.

He claimed Arthur had coerced him.

We didn't know whether to believe him.

Until he handed over one final file.

It was a transaction record.

Arthur had transferred millions into an offshore account.

Recipient:

Duca Children's Trust.

My foundation.

My name had been used to launder the money.

If prosecutors believed I knew about it, I could lose everything.

Grace came to my office.

"Are you afraid?"

"Yes."

"Good."

I stared at her.

She smiled faintly.

"My mother used to say fear can tell you when something matters."

I looked at her.

"What happens if I lose the company?"

She shrugged.

"You'll still be Leo."

I laughed.

It was the first time in days.

"You're very calm."

"No."

She looked at me.

"I'm terrified."

I realized then that courage wasn't the absence of fear.

It was continuing anyway.

We gave investigators full access.

The records proved the foundation had been used without my knowledge.

The money had been routed through fake scholarship programs created by Arthur's network.

But Arthur still had one move.

He kidnapped Anna.

We received a video.

Anna was tied to a chair in an unknown room.

Arthur sat beside her.

"Bring me Elias."

He looked into the camera.

"Or she dies."

Grace collapsed.

I caught her.

Mia stood frozen.

Elias stepped forward.

"It's my fault."

"No."

He looked at me.

"I should go."

"You'll be killed."

"Maybe."

I shook my head.

"We don't trade witnesses."

Daniel spoke.

"Then we find him."

The video contained one sound.

A train horn.

Three seconds later.

A second horn.

I realized something.

"Industrial district."

Daniel nodded.

"We have a train line near the old Duca factory."

We found the building.

Police surrounded it.

Inside were Arthur, Martin, Anna, and three armed men.

The rescue went wrong almost immediately.

A gunshot shattered the window.

Daniel was hit in the shoulder.

Grace screamed.

I pushed through the side entrance.

Arthur saw me.

"Leo."

"You've lost."

He laughed.

"Have I?"

He pulled a folder from his coat.

"Everything you've built belongs to people who are willing to destroy you."

I stepped closer.

"Not anymore."

He threw the folder.

Documents scattered.

One was my father's final will.

Arthur had altered it.

My father had actually left controlling interest in the foundation to a trust.

Not me.

Not Arthur.

Grace's mother.

The woman who had been silenced.

The trust had been designed to support employees.

Arthur had stolen control through forged signatures.

I looked at him.

"You built an empire on stolen paper."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"People don't care about truth."

He raised his gun.

Then Daniel stepped from behind him.

"Some do."

Daniel had blood running down his shirt.

He held Arthur's gun arm.

Police rushed in.

Arthur was arrested.

Martin surrendered.

Anna was freed.

For the first time in decades, the secrets were no longer hidden.

But one question remained.

Who had been knocking behind the wall before Mia ever entered the study?

The answer came the next morning.

Elias showed me a second passage.

It led to a tiny room containing a radio.

The knocking had been produced by a mechanical timer.

Mia had heard it every night.

Someone had deliberately created the sound.

Not to scare people.

To communicate.

Inside the room was a note.

Written in my father's handwriting.

WHEN THEY COME, LISTEN TO THE CHILD.

Under it was another sentence.

SHE WILL NOTICE WHAT WE MISS.

May you like

Mia had been the first person to hear the truth.

And because she did, we had found everything.
