Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Siege

The divorce hearing was not a negotiation; it was an execution. Daniel’s lawyer arrived with a folder full of aggressive demands, acting as if they held all the cards. I sat across from them, my briefcase containing every single transaction, email, and security footage clip I had collected over the last twelve months. When it was my turn to present evidence, I didn't just mention the affair. I presented the financial crime report. The courtroom hummed as the judge reviewed the documentation.

The numbers didn't lie. I had tracked every cent he had siphoned from my mother’s estate, every fraudulent signature on our tax returns, and the digital logs of his shell companies. His lawyer looked at me, not with arrogance, but with a sudden, sharp fear. They realized they weren't dealing with a spurned housewife; they were dealing with a forensic accountant who had spent a year building an airtight case against them. Daniel stopped looking at me altogether, his gaze fixed on the floor. He knew, as I did, that the math of his life was officially in the red.

The judge, a woman known for her impatience with financial malfeasance, grew colder with every page she turned. She looked at Daniel and asked him to explain the discrepancies in the asset declarations. He began to stutter, his excuses falling apart under the weight of the evidence. There were no more "misunderstandings." There was only the objective, brutal truth of the records. As the hearing concluded, the judge issued a temporary restraining order and froze all remaining accounts associated with his name. The demand for half my retirement evaporated in seconds, replaced by an injunction that would keep him financially crippled until the criminal investigation was complete.
