Chapter 2 - The Forensic Truth

“Emily, put those away,” Brandon commanded, attempting to summon his usual domineering tone. But his voice cracked, betraying his desperation. He forced a sickeningly sweet smile. “Em, honey, your mother is clearly having a breakdown. Let’s go to the bridal suite and sort this out.”
“Don’t touch me,” Emily said. Her voice was quiet, but the trembling had stopped.
She looked down at the second document in the box. It was a prenuptial agreement, but not the one she had signed. This one was covered in sticky notes and financial projections.
“Read the note on page four, Emily,” I instructed gently.
Emily’s eyes scanned the page, and she gasped. “This... this says my teacher’s pension and the life insurance from Dad… it says they would be used as collateral for a commercial loan?”
“Yes,” I said, keeping my eyes locked on Brandon. “The Harrows are completely bankrupt, sweetheart. They didn’t want you for your compliance, and they certainly didn’t want you for love. They wanted you because your credit score is immaculate, and the trust fund your father left you was the exact amount they needed to cover a missed margin call next Tuesday.”
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Two hundred guests—investors, socialites, and alleged friends of the Harrows—began whispering furiously. A few men in expensive tuxedos, likely investors in the Harrows' hedge fund, immediately pulled out their phones, their faces pale with panic.
“You vindictive bitch!” Brandon roared, dropping all pretense. He raised his hand, stepping toward me with a furious, violent glint in his eye.
Before his arm could even swing down, two men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows near the kitchen doors. They hadn't been on the guest list. I had invited them personally.
“Mr. Harrow,” one of the men said, flashing a gold badge. “FBI. I suggest you keep your hands to yourself.”
Celeste collapsed into her chair, clutching her pearls as if they could somehow choke out the reality of the situation. “Brandon, do something!” she shrieked.
“There is nothing he can do, Celeste,” I said calmly. “I submitted my forensic audit to the SEC and the FBI three weeks ago. I spent nights tracing every shell company, every phantom asset, and every fraudulent tax return your son filed. I knew who you were before the invitations were even mailed.”
Emily looked at me, her eyes wide with shock. “Mom... you knew? Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you let me walk down the aisle?”
My heart ached as I looked at my beautiful, bruised daughter. I reached out and gently cupped her cheek. “Because, my sweet girl, if I had told you three weeks ago, you would have confronted him in private. You would have given him the benefit of the doubt. And he would have gaslighted you, abused you, and convinced you that I was crazy. He would have isolated you further.”
I glanced at the gray housekeeping uniform still sitting in the open box. “He needed to show you exactly who he was, in front of everyone. And I needed to make sure he could never, ever hide in the shadows again.”

Brandon was breathing heavily, cornered like a rat. “This is a setup! You’re framing us!”
“The bank records don't lie, Brandon,” I replied. “Numbers never do.”
