Chapter 7 - A New Chapter

Two years after the day the Harrows' empire collapsed, the air was warm, and the suburban trees were heavy with summer leaves.
Emily and David had been dating for over a year. Their relationship was built on a foundation of deep friendship, shared values, and mutual respect. There were no grand, performative gestures designed to impress an audience. Instead, there was quiet, steady love. He brought her coffee when she was grading papers late at night; she helped him organize files for his pro-bono cases.
They decided to move in together, and we spent a Saturday afternoon packing up Emily’s childhood bedroom.
As she was emptying the top shelf of her closet, she pulled down a white cardboard box. She paused, running her hands over the lid. I recognized it immediately. It was the box Celeste Harrow had given her.
“You kept it?” I asked, surprised.
Emily opened the box. Inside was the gray polyester housekeeping uniform. She pulled it out and looked at it, not with tears, but with a thoughtful smile.
“I kept it as a reminder,” she said softly. “Whenever I felt weak, or whenever I doubted myself this past year, I would look at this ugly dress. It reminds me of the exact moment I realized my own worth. It reminds me of you, standing up in front of all those billionaires, armed with nothing but paper and truth.”
She folded the uniform back into the box and handed it to me.
“But I don't need the reminder anymore, Mom. Throw it away for me?”
I took the box, feeling the weight of the past two years finally lift from our shoulders completely. “I think we can do better than the trash,” I smiled.
We took the box to the metal fire pit in my backyard. David came out with a lighter and a thermos of hot cocoa. We stood together under the twilight sky, watching as Emily tossed the gray uniform into the flames. The cheap polyester melted and burned, sending a column of dark smoke up into the night, until nothing was left but ash.
“To new beginnings,” David said, raising his mug.

“To new beginnings,” Emily and I echoed. She leaned her head on his shoulder, and he wrapped an arm around her, kissing the top of her head.
The ghosts of the Harrow family were finally, permanently gone.
