Chapter 3 - The District Attorney's Condition

My investigation didn't stop at the digital footprint of the murder. I needed to know why.

Through a private forensic accountant who owed me a favor, I traced the financial breadcrumbs Daniel thought he had cleverly hidden.

Two months before the tragedy, Daniel had secretly purchased a twenty-million-dollar life insurance policy connected to Emma and Ethan. The beneficiary was not him, nor was it me. It was a shadowy shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.

The controlling owner of that shell company? Vanessa’s brother.

Furthermore, just two days after my babies died, while I was heavily sedated and making funeral arrangements, Daniel transferred five hundred thousand dollars to that same man from our joint savings, labeling it a "business consulting payment."

The evidence was overwhelming. It was sickening. But when I brought the encrypted files to District Attorney Sarah Miller—a woman known for her ruthlessness in court—she sighed heavily.

“The digital records establish opportunity and a clear financial motive,” she explained, tapping her pen against the printed logs. “But Daniel has retained Marcus Vance, the most expensive defense attorney in the state.”

She leaned forward, her eyes filled with sympathy but her voice strict with legal reality.

“Vance will claim the audio files were AI-generated or altered. He will argue that your company's system was hacked by an outside competitor wanting to frame your husband. In front of a jury, reasonable doubt is easily bought by a slick lawyer.”

I stared at her, feeling a cold wave of frustration. “So, what do we need?”

“We need him to boast,” she said quietly. “We need him to reveal what he knows, the specifics of the crime that only the killer could know, in his own words, in a setting where he cannot claim he was coerced.”

So, I formulated a plan. I gave Daniel the opportunity to become arrogant, because arrogance always breeds carelessness.

I needed to become the exact thing he accused me of being at the funeral: weak, broken, and ready to surrender.
