Chapter 5 - Footsteps in the Lake House

The lake house was a sprawling, modern masterpiece of glass and steel, nestled against the edge of a dark, silent pine forest.

Since the night of the tragedy, the air inside had felt heavy, haunted by the echoes of childish laughter that would never ring through the halls again.

I arrived six hours early. DA Miller’s specialized technical team had already been there. They had rigged the living room with invisible, state-of-the-art surveillance equipment. Microphones were embedded in the walls; fiber-optic cameras were hidden inside the light fixtures and the fireplace mantle.

Outside, concealed in an unmarked van hidden deep in the tree line, a team of detectives and the DA herself sat wearing headphones, waiting for my signal.

At 7:55 PM, the headlights of Daniel’s sleek black Mercedes cut through the darkness of the driveway.

I sat on the white leather sofa, holding a glass of untouched red wine. I had applied makeup to make my eyes look sunken and exhausted. The legal documents—completely fake, drafted by DA Miller—rested on the glass coffee table in front of me.

The front door opened.

Daniel walked in, wearing a sharp, casual suit, looking like a man without a single care in the world. But he wasn't alone.

Vanessa stepped in behind him, wearing a designer trench coat, looking around my house with the greedy eyes of a scavenger.

“You brought her here?” I whispered, letting my voice shake, perfectly playing the part of the humiliated, defeated wife. “To the place where they died?”

“Oh, spare me the drama,” Daniel scoffed, tossing his keys onto the counter. “Vanessa is going to be the new Vice President of the company once you sign it over. She has a right to see her new assets.”

He walked over to the coffee table, picked up the pen, and held it out to me.

“Sign the papers. You admit fault, you hand over the shares, and we all walk away. You can go rot in whatever psychiatric ward you belong in.”

The trap was set. Now, I just needed to spring it.
