Chapter 4 - The Arrival of the King

"To the future of the Vale name!" Vanessa declared, raising her champagne flute high.
"To Vale Hospitality!" the crowd echoed.
Just as the glasses clinked, a blinding sweep of headlights washed across the massive floor-to-ceiling ballroom windows.
The bright beams cut through the dim, romantic lighting of the gala.
Outside the glass doors, the long circular driveway was suddenly occupied.
Not by taxis. Not by ordinary town cars.
Six massive, black, armored SUVs stopped simultaneously in a perfect, synchronized line.
The sheer intimidation of the convoy made the orchestra falter once again.
The music died completely.
The heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom were pushed open violently.
Six security officers in dark suits entered first.
They moved with military precision, their eyes scanning the room, ignoring the gasps of the wealthy guests.
They formed a silent, immovable corridor right through the center of the crowd, parting the sea of socialites like Moses parting the Red Sea.
Then, Daniel appeared.
He wore a custom black tuxedo, his tall frame dominating the entrance.
His face was rigidly controlled, handsome but terrifyingly still.
His jaw was clenched, and his eyes, cold as winter ice, swept the room until they locked onto me.
Every major executive, banker, and politician in the room instantly recognized him.
Daniel Mercer was not a myth; he was a titan.
On stage, Vanessa’s raised glass began to tremble. The champagne spilled over the rim, dripping onto her fingers.
Daniel walked the length of the ballroom, his footsteps echoing in the dead silence.
He didn't look right or left. He didn't acknowledge the mayor, the celebrities, or my father.
He walked directly toward me, radiating a quiet, lethal fury.
When he reached me, his expression softened only for a fraction of a second.
He stopped before me.
Without a word, he smoothly removed his own suit jacket.
He stepped close, wrapping the warm, heavy fabric over my bare shoulders, covering the torn silk perfectly.
His hands lingered on my arms, a silent reassurance. He fastened the front button gently.
"Are you hurt?" his voice was a low rumble, meant only for me.
"No," I replied, feeling the familiar comfort of his scent.
His eyes moved from my face down to the torn silk visible beneath the hem of his jacket. The muscle in his jaw feathered.
He turned slowly, facing the crowd, and his voice carried across the dead-silent room.
"Who did this?"
I didn't hesitate. I raised my hand and pointed straight at the stage. At Vanessa.
May you like
The entire room seemed to physically shrink away from her, leaving her isolated under the spotlight.
