Chapter 5 - The House of Cards

Daniel turned his terrifying gaze to the stage.

"My wife deserves respect," he said, his voice echoing like a judge delivering a sentence.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her arrogant facade cracking. She forced a high, nervous laugh.

"Daniel! Mr. Mercer, please. This is... this is just family teasing. You know how sisters are. Evelyn is just being oversensitive."

"Family teasing?" Daniel repeated softly. The quietness of his voice made it ten times more intimidating.

My father hurried forward, practically tripping over the steps of the stage.

He wiped sweat from his forehead. "Mr. Mercer! Please, accept my apologies. Vanessa made an unfortunate, clumsy joke. But let us not ruin the night! Tonight, we celebrate our glorious partnership."

Daniel glanced at my father as if he were an insect.

"There is no partnership, Richard."

The silence that followed struck harder than thunder. It was a physical weight in the room.

Vanessa lowered the microphone, her face turning pale. "What... what are you talking about? The contract was approved by your board yesterday."

"It was conditional upon final financial verification," I said, stepping out from behind Daniel.

My voice was steady, carrying easily through the quiet room.

Vanessa’s head snapped toward me, her eyes wide with panic and confusion.

At that moment, the heavy doors opened again.

Daniel’s Chief Legal Officer, Maya Chen, strode into the ballroom.

She wore a sharp gray suit and carried a slim black folder.

Right behind her marched two senior forensic accountants from Mercer Global, flanked by the gala hotel’s own director of security.

Eleanor gripped my father’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging into his sleeve. "Richard! Do something! What is happening?"

My father stared at me. For the first time in twenty years, he truly looked at me.

Not through the lens of disappointment, but with genuine shock.

"Evelyn," he whispered, his voice trembling. "What have you done?"

"I checked the numbers, Father," I said simply.

Vanessa scoffed loudly, her desperation making her voice crack. "You? Checked the numbers? You design charity invitations! You know absolutely nothing about corporate finance!"

Daniel let out a short, humorless laugh. He looked almost amused by her profound ignorance.

"Evelyn founded Mercer Global’s internal risk division," Daniel announced, his voice ringing with pride.

"She has personally protected our company from three hostile acquisitions. Over the last four years, she has recovered eighty-four million dollars in stolen corporate assets."

Gasps and rapid whispers raced through the ballroom like wildfire.

Phones were already out. People were recording.

I had never actively hidden my work. I used my married name professionally.

My father and Vanessa had simply never cared to ask what I did with my life.

They assumed I lived off Daniel's wealth, mistaking my desire for privacy as a symptom of weakness and lack of ambition.

May you like

They were fatally wrong.
