Chapter 4 - The Pushback

The photograph was a threat, perfectly designed to bypass legal definitions of harassment. It wasn't explicit. It was just a picture. If I took it to a judge, Sterling would argue a fan or a paparazzi took it. But the message was clear: I know where she is, and you cannot protect her.
I didn't show the photo to Claire. She was already flinching at shadows.
Over the next two weeks, the psychological warfare intensified. It started with small things. My car alarm going off at 2:00 a.m. Silent phone calls to my personal number. Then, the pressure hit my career.
Captain Miller called me in again. Internal Affairs had received an anonymous tip accusing me of using police databases for personal vendettas. My access to the system was temporarily suspended pending an inquiry.
"They're trying to blind you, Mara," Miller told me quietly. "Ethan's father had lunch with the Police Commissioner yesterday. Officially, they discussed budget reforms. Unofficially... well."
"They're squeezing me so I'll convince Claire to walk away," I said, furious.
"And are you going to?"
"I'd rather die."
I went rogue. If I couldn't use the police database, I would use my badge on the streets. I took a week of personal leave. I knew that monsters like Ethan Vance didn't just snap one night. Abuse is a pattern. If he did this to Claire, he had done it before.
I spent days digging through old public records, newspaper archives, and social media deep-dives. I tracked down Ethan's college girlfriend, a woman named Sarah Lin who had mysteriously dropped out of her senior year and moved out of state after dating him.
I found Sarah living in a modest suburb in Ohio. I flew there on a Tuesday.
When I knocked on her door, a woman with tired eyes answered. She saw my badge, and her face went completely pale.
"I have nothing to say to the police," she said, trying to shut the door.
I put my foot in the jam. "I'm not here officially, Sarah. I'm here because my twin sister is currently hiding in my apartment with two broken ribs and a shattered face. Ethan Vance did it."
Sarah froze. Her eyes filled with a sudden, overwhelming grief. She slowly opened the door and let me in.
We sat in her kitchen. She poured me water with shaking hands.
"He was perfect for the first year," Sarah whispered, staring at the table. "Then... the rules started. What I could wear, who I could talk to. When I tried to leave, he beat me so badly I lost hearing in my left ear for a month. His father came to my hospital room. He brought a briefcase with a hundred thousand dollars in cash and a non-disclosure agreement."
"Sarah, I need you to testify," I pleaded. "If you show the jury it's a pattern, his self-defense claim falls apart."
She shook her head violently. "No. No, you don't understand. If I break that NDA, they will ruin my life. I have a husband now. A daughter. I can't."
"He's going to kill my sister."
Sarah looked at me, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Detective. I survived him by disappearing. I won't go back into the dark."
I left Ohio with a heavy heart, but with a new piece of the puzzle. I knew Ethan's weak point. His father's money was his shield. If I could prove the father bribed a witness, the entire Vance empire would crumble.

But when I landed back home, my phone blew up with texts from my neighbor.
Someone tried to force your apartment door. Police are here.
