Chapter 7 - The Trial of Truth

The police raided the factory just as the masked man was preparing to put a bullet in my head. They breached the doors with flashbangs, swarming the building. I was rescued, bruised and concussed, but alive.

Ethan’s master plan had unraveled in a single night. Not only was he arrested for violating his bail and breaking and entering, but the man who kidnapped me rolled on him to avoid a life sentence. He confessed that Ethan Vance had paid him fifty thousand dollars to murder a police officer.

Six months later, the trial began.

The courtroom was packed with reporters. The Vance family’s PR machine had finally broken down. You can spin a domestic dispute, but you cannot spin the attempted murder of a decorated detective.

Charles Sterling paced the courtroom floor, looking significantly less confident than he had months ago. He tried to argue that the kidnapping was done without Ethan's knowledge, that Ethan merely went to the apartment to "reconcile" and was brutally shot by a hysterical woman.

Then, the prosecution called their star witness.

Claire walked to the stand. She was wearing a tailored gray suit. The bruises had long faded, but there was a faint, permanent scar near her left eye. She held her head high.

As she testified, detailing the months of psychological abuse, the controlling behavior, and the night of the savage beating, the courtroom fell dead silent. She spoke with a calm, undeniable clarity.

"He told me that his money made him a god," Claire said, looking directly at the jury. "He told me that nobody would believe me. And for a long time, I thought he was right. But the truth doesn't need money to be real."

Sterling tried to break her during cross-examination. He hammered her about the gun, accusing her of attempted murder.

"You shot an unarmed man in the dark, didn't you, Mrs. Vance?" Sterling demanded.

"He was holding a steel pipe, and he had just confessed to orchestrating the kidnapping of my sister," Claire replied calmly. "I stopped a threat. Exactly as my sister trained me to do."

But the final nail in the coffin didn't come from Claire.

The courtroom doors opened, and a woman walked in. It was Sarah Lin.

Hearing about my kidnapping on the national news had broken her silence. She could no longer hide while others bled. Sarah took the stand and told the world about the beatings, the threats, and the briefcase of cash Ethan’s father had given her.

The jury gasped. Ethan’s father, sitting in the front row, went white as a sheet. The corruption was out in the open. The empire was falling.

When the prosecution played the security footage from my apartment—the audio of Ethan threatening Claire, proving he broke in with malicious intent—Ethan buried his face in his hands.

The monster had finally been dragged into the light.
