Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Floorboards

It began as a faint, irregular vibration, so subtle that Mark initially mistook it for the settling of the old house. He was sitting in his basement workshop late one Tuesday evening, applying a final coat of lacquer to a custom-designed walnut cabinet. The silence of the basement was absolute, punctuated only by the rhythmic stroke of his brush. Suddenly, a dull, metallic thud echoed from the far corner of the cellar, near the locked storage room Clara strictly forbade him from entering. He paused, holding his breath, his brush suspended in mid-air. He listened closely, his heart beginning to thud against his ribs. It wasn’t a sound of structural shifting; it sounded like a frantic, desperate scraping, followed by a muffled, high-pitched whimper that sounded terrifyingly human.
Shaking his head, Mark tried to rationalize the noise. Perhaps it was a wild animal—a stray raccoon or a nest of squirrels that had managed to claw their way into the crawlspace beneath the old wooden floor. The next day at breakfast, he brought it up casually, hoping Clara would laugh it off. Instead, the moment the words left his mouth, her movements froze. Her hand remained suspended over her teacup, her knuckles turning white. Slowly, she turned her head toward him, her lips stretching into that familiar, eerily serene smile. She laughed softly, a dry, melodic sound that chilled Mark to the bone, telling him it was nothing but old pipes and his overactive imagination. She patted his hand gently, but her fingers were icy cold.
That night, Mark couldn't sleep. The image of Clara’s sudden stillness haunted him. As she slept soundly beside him, her breathing slow and perfectly regulated, Mark slipped out of bed. Guided by an insatiable, fearful curiosity, he crept down to the cellar. He stood in the dark, staring at the heavy wooden door of the restricted storage room. He pressed his ear against the cold wood, and his blood ran cold. From beneath the floorboards of that locked room came the distinct, unmistakable sound of a child’s soft, trembling sob. It was a sound of pure terror, muffled and buried deep within the foundations of his own home.
