Chapter 6 - The Shadow Behind Him

Sweat poured down Mark's face, stinging his eyes as he struggled with the rusted metal. The heavy bolt cutters slipped slightly, clanking loudly against the iron chain, sending a sharp, echoing ring through the silent basement. Mark gasped, holding his breath, his eyes darting frantically around the shadows of the room. He adjusted his grip, his hands slick with sweat and grime, and pressed down again. The metal groaned, but the chain held firm. Desperation clawed at his throat. He could feel the cold draft rising from the gaps in the trapdoor, carrying with it the silent plea of the innocent child trapped below. He poured every ounce of his strength into the handles, praying for the metal to snap.

He was so consumed by his frantic task that he did not hear the soft, creaking step on the stairs behind him. He did not see the shadow that slowly elongated across the wooden floor, stretching toward him like a dark, reaching hand. Clara stood at the bottom of the stairs, her hair still slightly damp from her bath, wearing her thick, dark-grey cable-knit sweater. Her face was partially cast in shadow, illuminated only by the single, dramatic spotlight-like beam of light shining down from the ceiling. In her right hand, she held a sharp, metallic switchblade knife, the blade reflecting the cold light with a quiet, menacing gleam.

She did not scream. She did not rush him. Instead, she stood perfectly still, watching his frantic, futile efforts with a mixture of amusement and profound disappointment. To her, Mark was no longer her beloved husband; he was a broken toy, a variable she had failed to control. She stepped closer, her bare feet making absolutely no sound on the dusty floorboards. She positioned herself directly behind him, leaning down slightly, her cold eyes staring at the back of his neck as he continued to struggle with the chain, completely oblivious to the deadly predator hovering just inches away.
