Chapter 3 - The Silent Feed

The heavy walnut double doors of Richard’s private study swung shut, locking out the muffled sounds of the gala downstairs.

Inside the sanctuary of dark mahogany paneling and towering leather-bound books, the only illumination came from a bank of monitors.

Richard carried Maya over to the leather chesterfield sofa, carefully laying a soft cashmere throw over her small body.

"Stay right here, baby," he whispered, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead.

"Daddy is right across the room."

Maya’s lip quivered, but she watched him with wide, vigilant eyes, her tiny hands clutching the wool blanket.

Richard walked behind his massive executive desk and keyed his biometric thumbprint into the encrypted console.

The Sterling estate was wired with an advanced thirty-two-camera commercial security system.

High-resolution lenses monitored every perimeter gate, every terrace, every hallway, and every common room.

Richard clicked on the camera interface, pulling up the live grid.

Downstairs in the ballroom, he could see the ocean of black suits and diamond necklaces moving under the chandeliers.

Victoria was standing near the grand marble fireplace, holding a flute of champagne, smiling radiantly at a visiting foreign ambassador.

She looked composed, untouchable, the picture-perfect matriarch of the Sterling dynasty.

Richard brought up the archive tab and navigated to the east wing nursery.

He selected the timestamp from five o’clock that afternoon, when Victoria had gone in to dress Maya for the photographers.

The screen blinked once, transitioning from the live feed to the recorded loop.

The camera in the nursery was concealed within the molding near the ceiling, positioned to oversee the crib and dressing station.

Richard leaned closer to the monitor, his knuckles whitening against the edge of the mahogany desk.

On the screen, Mrs. Gable could be seen exiting the room at 5:12 PM, closing the door behind her.

Two minutes later, Victoria entered.

She was already wearing her wine-red velvet gala dress, moving with that fluid, practiced grace.

She walked toward the changing table where Maya was sitting on a padded stool, playing with a small wooden horse.

Victoria approached the toddler, her mouth moving, though the nursery cameras did not have an active audio capture.

Richard watched as Victoria reached down to pull the wooden toy out of Maya’s hands.

Maya shook her head and tucked the toy into her chest.

What happened next made the blood in Richard’s veins turn to pure, freezing lead.

Victoria did not negotiate, nor did she use the patient coaxing of a mother.

Her posture changed instantly.

Her shoulders pulled back with an aggressive, predatory stiffness.

She snatched the wooden horse from the two-year-old’s grip with such violent force that Maya tumbled backward onto the padded mat.

Before Maya could scramble up, Victoria leaned over her, planting her left hand firmly onto the toddler’s tiny chest.

Her face, previously so warm in public, twisted into a cold, contemptuous snarl.

With her right hand, Victoria reached down and deliberately twisted the soft flesh of Maya’s upper arm.

It was not an accident; it was a calculated, vicious squeeze designed to cause immediate pain without leaving a broken bone.

On the silent video feed, Richard could see his baby girl’s mouth open in that same horrific, soundless cry he had seen in the hallway.

Maya wriggled desperately, her small legs kicking against the velvet skirt, trying to push the woman away.

Victoria leaned down closer until her face was inches from Maya's ear, clearly whispering a harsh threat.

She held the pinch for five agonizing seconds before roughly pulling the child upright by the wrist.

Victoria shook the toddler once, then began forcing the ruffled pink dress over Maya's head with angry, violent jerks.

Whenever Maya tried to turn away, Victoria tapped her forehead sharply with long, manicured nails.

Richard sat in the dim blue glow of the monitors, unable to draw air into his lungs.

His mind reeled backward through the last eight months of his marriage.

He remembered the countless times Maya had cried uncontrollably when Victoria entered a room.

He remembered the bruises on her knees that Victoria had blamed on awkward toddler stumbles.

He remembered how he had told Victoria that she was a wonderful stepmother and that Maya just needed time to adjust.

I handed my daughter to a monster, Richard thought, a violent tremor running through his clenched jaw.

I gave her the keys to my home and told my child to accept her.

Downstairs, three hundred people were waiting for him to raise a glass to charity, family, and progress.

Victoria Vance was standing downstairs right now, basking in the glow of his empire, playing the grieving, patient stepmother.

On the sofa, Maya let out a soft, frightened whimper in her sleep, her brow furrowing with nightmares.

Richard pushed his chair back, stood up, and pulled a clean thumb drive from his desk drawer.

He slotted the drive into the console, exported the high-definition footage, and waited for the progress bar to complete.

Once the file was transferred, he slipped the drive into his breast pocket, resting right over his racing heart.

He walked over to the sofa, picked Maya up into his arms, and wrapped the cashmere blanket securely around her.

He was not going to make a scene in the hallway like an enraged beast.

Richard Sterling had built a fortune by outmaneuvering cutthroat corporate rivals who thought they could break him.

Victoria Vance thought she had mastered the art of social manipulation.

She had no idea that her world had just ended.
