Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

A quiet murmur rippled across the grand ballroom as Richard plugged the thumb drive into the multimedia console on the lectern.
Victoria’s aristocratic poise showed its first genuine crack.
Her hands dropped to the sides of her wine-red velvet gown, her knuckles tightening until the fabric strained.
"Richard?" she whispered, leaning toward him with a strained smile meant to maintain appearances for the guests.
"Darling, what are you doing?
This isn’t the foundation reel."
Richard did not answer her.
He tapped the touchscreen interface, activating the massive, eighty-inch high-definition screen mounted behind the stage.
The ballroom lights dimmed automatically as the projector fired to life.
The guests quieted, expecting a polished corporate video highlighting the Sterling Foundation’s charitable donations.
Instead, the screen illuminated with the sharp, clinical timestamp of 5:12 PM from the east wing nursery.
Victoria’s breath caught sharply in her throat, a sickening gasp that only Richard could hear over the microphone.
Her skin instantly lost every trace of color, turning the shade of powdered chalk beneath the stage spotlights.
On the massive screen, Mrs. Gable was seen exiting the room, followed moments later by Victoria entering in the very gown she wore tonight.
The room watched in absolute, paralyzed silence as the scene played out in excruciating high definition.
The giant display showed Victoria approaching the tiny girl on the stool, ripping the wooden horse violently from her hands.
A collective, sharp inhalation sounded across the three hundred guests as Victoria shoved Maya backward onto the mat.
Then came the moment of absolute horror.
The camera zoomed slightly as the high-resolution lens captured Victoria leaning down, her face contorting with ugly malice.
Her manicured hand sank into the soft flesh of Maya’s arm, twisting with deliberate, sickening cruelty.
On the silent feed, the toddler's silent scream was magnified twenty times its size, projected before senators, investors, and family friends.
"Oh, my God," someone gasped from the front table.
A champagne flute slipped from a socialite’s hand, shattering against the parquet floor with a sharp crash.
Senator Hayes stepped back in visible revulsion, his mouth hanging open as he stared from the screen to the woman on the stage.
Victoria stood completely frozen, the diamond necklace around her throat glittering under the bright glare of her own exposed sadism.
"Richard, turn it off!" she hissed, her voice abandoning its melodious tone, replaced by raw, frantic venom.
"This is an invasion!
You're taking it out of context!
She was throwing a violent tantrum!"
Richard stepped back from the lectern, looking at her with cold, merciless disgust.
"Out of context, Victoria?" Richard spoke directly into the live microphone, his voice thundering through the ballroom's surround sound speakers.
"Is twisting the flesh of a two-year-old child an educational technique in the Vance household?"
Victoria lunged toward the console to pull the drive, but Richard caught her wrist in a vice-like grip.
He did not squeeze hard enough to bruise, but his grip was iron, anchoring her directly under the spotlights.
"Look at the screen, Victoria," Richard commanded, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the room.
"Look at what you did while I was putting on my tie upstairs.
Look at the mother you promised to be."
Tears of pure humiliation and rage spilled over Victoria's mascara, streaking her pale face.
"You think you can ruin me?" she snarled in a frantic whisper, realizing the room was utterly lost to her.
"My family owns half the commercial real estate on this island!
My lawyers will tear your reputation apart!
You can't prove a pattern of abuse from one isolated misunderstanding!"
"I don't need to prove a pattern to the courts tonight," Richard replied, his voice deadly quiet, yet picked up clearly by the lapel mic.
"The world has already seen who you are.
And as for the courts..."
Richard gestured toward the main ballroom entrance.
The heavy brass doors swung open once more.
Two uniformed officers from the county police department walked into the hall, accompanied by a detective in a gray suit.
Behind them, Marcus stood with Mrs. Gable, who was already handcuffed, her clinical composure completely shattered.
"Mrs. Victoria Sterling," the lead detective announced, his boots clicking sharply on the floor as he approached the stage.
"We have an active warrant for child endangerment and domestic assault based on surveillance evidence provided by your security director."
Victoria stared at the approaching handcuffs, her chest heaving as the socialites she had dined with turned their backs in disgust.
"Richard, please!" she begged, her voice breaking into a desperate screech as the officers mounted the stage.
"I did it for us!
She was always between us!
She has Eleanor’s eyes, Richard!
She looked at me like I didn't belong in my own house!"
"You never belonged here," Richard said, letting go of her wrist and stepping away.
The female officer pulled Victoria’s arms behind her velvet gown, the cold steel of the handcuffs snapping shut with a final, metallic click.
As the police escorted the trembling, ruined socialite down the center aisle through the sea of horrified guests, Richard turned his back on the crowd.
He did not care about the gala, the millions in foundation pledges, or the tomorrow morning headlines that would rock the business world.

He walked off the stage, through the service doors, and headed toward the south gate annex.
His daughter was waiting for him.
