Chapter 14 - The Ammonia StormThe explosion of the high-pressure valve was deafening.

Choking, toxic ammonia gas sprayed into the room like a blizzard, blinding everyone instantly. The mercenaries screamed, dropping their weapons as the chemical burned their eyes and lungs.

“Go! Go!” Roman yelled, grabbing my arm as the room devolved into absolute chaos.

Gunfire erupted blindly in the white mist. Roman fired from the hip, neutralizing the three traitors before they could orient themselves. The cold air inside the freezer quickly turned into a suffocating trap as the gas expanded.

Lorenzo’s voice echoed through the fog, coughing violently but still furious. “Kill them! Don’t let them reach the doors!”

Marcus, who had been stationed outside as a backup, used a tactical explosive breach on the main steel doors. The blast knocked us off our feet, but it cleared a path. Roman scooped me up, coughing heavily, and dragged me out into the pouring rain of the courtyard.

Behind us, the meatpacking plant was venting green-white gas into the sky.

“Did we get him?” I gasped, rubbing my burning eyes with rainwater.

Marcus came out, bleeding from a superficial wound on his forehead. “No, boss. Lorenzo’s inner circle pulled him out through a rear escape tunnel. He’s alive. But we took out his main tactical unit.”

Roman looked at me, his face covered in soot and ice, a look of profound realization in his eyes. “You could have killed us all, Bianca.”

“But I didn't,” I said, coughing up the last of the chemical taste. “I broke his trap. We aren't playing by their rules anymore, Roman. This isn't a mafia war. This is a street fight.”

Roman wiped the water from my face, his hands trembling with adrenaline. For the first time, he didn't look at me as a wife to protect. He looked at me as his equal commander.

“The council meeting is tomorrow night in Manhattan,” Roman said, his voice hardening into steel. “Lorenzo will try to force a vote of no confidence. That’s where we finish this.”
