Bloodline of the Broken / Chapter 8 / 20

Chapter 8 - The Midnight HourThe storm followed us back to New York.

Inside the private delivery suite of St. Jude’s Hospital, the atmosphere was a mix of intense anxiety and fierce protection. The labor was premature—eight months—and the doctors were scrambling to ensure there were no complications from the trauma I had suffered nights before.

Roman hadn't left my side. He had stripped off his suit jacket, his sleeves rolled up, his hands holding mine through every agonizing wave of pain.

“You can do this, Bianca,” he whispered against my forehead. “You are the strongest woman I have ever known. Push.”

“It hurts, Roman,” I sobbed, the physical pain blending with the exhaustion of the past week. “What if she’s not ready? What if I can’t protect her?”

“You already protected her,” he said, his eyes burning with absolute certainty. “You survived the rain. You survived my family. She is a fighter because she is yours.”

The monitor tracking the baby’s heart rate suddenly dipped. The rhythmic beeping slowed down significantly.

The lead obstetrician’s face grew serious. “The umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck. Her heart rate is dropping. We don't have time for a natural delivery. Prepare the OR for an emergency C-section!”

Panic seized my chest. “No, no, no...”

“Roman!” I screamed as nurses began wheeling my bed rapidly down the corridor toward the operating theater.

Roman walked right alongside the bed, keeping his grip on my hand until the very last second before the double doors. “I am right outside, Bianca! Nothing will happen to her! I swear it on my life!”

They administered the anesthesia, and the world began to blur into streaks of white light and muffled medical jargon. As my consciousness began to slip away, I prayed. Not to the god of the Kanes, but to the memory of my mother in Queens, who taught me to never give up.

Please let her live.

When I woke up, the harsh lights of the operating room had been replaced by the soft, warm glow of a recovery suite. The room was incredibly quiet. Too quiet.

I panicked, trying to sit up, but the incision in my abdomen burned with sharp pain. “Roman? My baby... where is my baby?”

The curtain pulled back.

Roman was standing there. In his arms, wrapped in a simple pink blanket, was a tiny, sleeping bundle of life. He walked over to me, his face transformed by a softness I had never seen before.

He gently laid her in my arms.

She had a tuft of dark hair, a tiny button nose, and when she opened her eyes for a brief second, they were the exact shade of midnight blue as Roman’s.

“Meet your daughter, Bianca,” Roman whispered, a tear finally escaping his eye. “Meet Clara Victoria Kane. The owner of everything.”
