Chapter 3 - The Five-Word Secret

Logan stared at her, trying to comprehend the sheer gravity of her words.

"Who?" he demanded, leaning across the table. "Who promised to kill us? Mira, what happened that night?"

Mira closed her eyes, the memories clearly causing her physical pain.

"Three years ago," she began, her voice trembling. "The night of the crash. You thought I was coming home late from the accounting firm."

Logan nodded. He remembered it perfectly. The rain, the police knocking on the door at 2:00 AM, the crushing weight of the world collapsing.

"I wasn't at the firm," Mira confessed, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I had uncovered something. At work. A massive discrepancy in the accounts for the Vance Corporation."

Logan knew the name. Vance Corp was one of the largest logistics companies in the state, deeply tied to local politics and real estate.

"They were moving money, Logan. Millions of it. Illegally," she explained, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Money linked to human trafficking and cartels. I found the shadow ledgers. I copied them onto a flash drive."

She took a shaky breath.

"I was going to the police that night. But they found out. They ran my car off the bridge on Route 9."

Logan’s knuckles turned white. "But the body..."

"The woman in the car was a hitchhiker I had picked up ten miles back in the storm," Mira choked out, covering her face. "She was asleep in the passenger seat. When they hit us, the car spun. She took the impact. The car caught fire."

Mira looked at Logan, haunted.

"I was thrown from the vehicle into the river. I nearly drowned. When I dragged myself onto the muddy bank, I saw the men in black suits standing over the burning wreck. I heard them talking on a radio."

Her voice dropped to a horrifyingly calm monotone.

"They said, 'If she somehow survived this, find the husband and the kid. Make it look like a home invasion.' They had our address, Logan. They had a picture of Eli."

Logan felt all the blood drain from his face.

"I knew," Mira sobbed, "that if the world knew I was alive, you would die. If I went to the police, the corrupt cops on Vance’s payroll would silence us all. The only way you and Eli could live safely... was if Mira Whitmore stayed dead."

Logan sat back in his chair, staring at the woman he loved.

For three years, he had harbored a tiny, irrational sliver of anger at her for leaving them. Now, he realized she had subjected herself to hell on earth, living on the streets, enduring cold and starvation, just to keep them breathing.

He stood up, walked around the table, and pulled her into his arms.

"You did it," he whispered into her hair, kissing her forehead. "You kept us safe. But you're done hiding, Mira. We are done hiding."

Mira shook her head frantically against his chest.

"No, Logan. You don't understand. I saw one of their men near the shelter yesterday. That's why I was hiding near the bookstore. They are still looking for me. They know I might be alive."

Logan pulled back, his eyes narrowing with a dangerous, protective fire.

"Do you still have it?" he asked. "The flash drive?"

May you like

Mira hesitated, then nodded slowly. "I hid it. In a safe deposit box at the downtown train station. I paid for ten years in cash before I disappeared."

"Then we have the weapon," Logan said coldly. "And it's time we blow this entire thing wide open."
