Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

The next few months were a chaotic whirlwind of depositions, protective custody, and explosive news headlines.
With Marcus's help, they retrieved the flash drive from the train station. The evidence was damning and irrefutable. It triggered a massive federal sweep.
The CEO of Vance Corporation, along with several high-ranking city officials and corrupt police officers, were indicted on federal racketeering, money laundering, and attempted murder charges.
The trial was a media sensation, but the Whitmore family was kept far away from the cameras, relocated to a quiet, secure town in the Pacific Northwest while the proceedings took place.
Healing was not instantaneous.
Mira still woke up screaming some nights, dreaming of the cold concrete and the roar of the river. She had a difficult time trusting open spaces, and sometimes she hoarded food in the pantry, old habits from the streets dying hard.
But she was undergoing intense trauma therapy, and every day, the haunted look in her eyes faded a little more.
Logan had to relearn his wife. They had missed three years of each other's lives, and they were different people now. But the foundation of their love had proven stronger than death itself. They spent long evenings sitting on their new porch, drinking coffee, simply marveling at the fact that they were together.
But the greatest healing happened in Eli.
The quiet, sorrowful boy who had spoken to an empty urn for three years had blossomed back into a vibrant, joyful child.
It was a crisp autumn afternoon. The leaves in their new backyard had turned brilliant shades of gold and crimson.
Logan stood at the kitchen window, washing dishes, watching his family outside.
Mira was sitting on a plaid blanket on the grass, looking healthier and more radiant than she had in years. Her hair was growing back thick and shiny, and she was wearing a bright yellow sweater.
Eli was running circles around her, trying to catch the falling autumn leaves before they hit the ground.
He tripped over a root and tumbled into the soft grass, dissolving into a fit of giggles. Mira laughed—a true, clear, beautiful sound that made Logan’s heart soar—and pulled her son into her lap.
She kissed the top of his head, wrapping her arms around him to keep him warm against the autumn chill.
Even through the closed window, Logan could see her lips move as she whispered to him.
My little moon.
May you like
Logan smiled, wiped his hands on a dish towel, and walked out the back door to join them.
The storm had passed. They had survived the longest night of their lives, and finally, they were home.
