Chapter 12 - The Final Diagnosis

The morning sun broke through the high windows of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, casting long, warm golden rays across the polished marble floors of the cardiac wing as the final chapter of the storm came to a peaceful close. Malcolm Ror and Arthur Vance had been taken into federal custody before dawn, their conspiracy dismantled piece by piece by the irrefutable evidence Audrey had helped secure and Callum’s relentless execution of justice. Inside Trauma Room 3, Patrick Ror sat propped up against a stack of crisp white pillows, looking significantly stronger as he sipped a cup of lukewarm, doctor-approved herbal tea while watching the morning news on the wall-mounted flat-screen. The heavy security detail outside the doors had vanished, replaced by standard hospital personnel as normalcy slowly returned to the floor. Audrey pushed the medication cart into the room, checking the intravenous drip and updating the electronic clipboard with practiced efficiency.

Patrick looked up from his tea, offering her a tired but genuine smile.

“Good morning, Nurse Hail.”

“Morning, Mr. Ror. Your labs look pristine today. If you keep this up, Dr. Park might actually discharge you by the end of the week.”

Patrick chuckled softly, glancing toward the doorway where Callum stood leaning against the frame, watching them both with a quiet, relaxed expression that no one outside this room had ever witnessed.

“I told my son something the other night,” Patrick said, his eyes twinkling with knowing amusement. “I want you on my permanent personal rotation, Audrey. Name your price.”

Audrey looked across the bed toward Callum, raising a single eyebrow in her signature challenging manner.

“I don’t come cheap, Mr. Ror. My rates include no unauthorized espresso, absolute obedience to hospital rules, and absolutely no mafia shootouts in my hallways.”

Patrick burst into a raspy laugh, nodding approvingly at his son.

“She’s perfect, Callum. Don't ever let her go.”

Callum pushed off from the doorframe, walking slowly toward the bed until he stood right beside Audrey, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a quiet, undeniable certainty.

“I don’t plan on it,” Callum said softly.

Audrey felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks, but she didn’t look away this time. She closed the metal chart folder with a crisp snap, offering him a small, genuine smile that belonged to no one else in the world.

“Shift’s over in ten minutes,” she said quietly. “Buy me a real coffee downstairs, and maybe I’ll forgive you for crashing my emergency room.”

Callum’s smile widened into something warm and complete as he extended his arm toward the door.

“Deal, Nurse Hail. Lead the way.”
