Chapter 4 - The Rising Tide

The tension inside the cardiac wing grew thick enough to choke on as Malcolm Ror squared off against his nephew in front of the open patient room. Inside, the high-pitched beep of Patrick’s heart monitor accelerated rapidly, hitting 106 beats per minute as the elderly man’s breathing grew shallow and labored. Audrey glanced at the screen, her clinical instincts overriding any hesitation as she made an executive decision.
“Everybody out,” she ordered sharply, refusing to yield an inch.
Malcolm stepped forward, his face darkening with offended dignity.
“Do you have any idea who you are speaking to, young lady? Move aside before I—!”
Before he could finish his threat, Audrey slammed her thumb against the staff-assistance emergency button on the wall. Two burly floor nurses rushed out from the nurses’ station in response, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Audrey.
“Mr. Ror’s heart rate is dangerously elevated,” Audrey announced, her voice echoing down the hall. “Visiting hours are officially over for everyone.”
Malcolm’s face hardened into a mask of suppressed fury.
“Callum, control your staff. This insolence has gone far enough.”
Callum did not look at his uncle. Instead, he stepped directly between Malcolm and Audrey, closing the physical distance and establishing an impenetrable human barrier.
“My father needs quiet,” Callum said, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly calm register that always preceded violence. “You heard the nurse. Leave.”
An intense, silent war of wills played out between the two older men, decades of family resentment, power struggles, and suppressed blood feuds boiling beneath the surface. Malcolm finally realized he had pushed too far for public consumption; he took two slow steps back, but not before casting a long, analytical glare toward Audrey. There was no outward anger in his eyes, only a cold calculation that sent an uncomfortable shiver down Audrey’s spine. As Malcolm and his men retreated toward the elevators, Patrick’s monitor suddenly flatlined into an erratic rhythm, and a sharp gasp rattled in the old man's chest.
“Dad!” Callum shouted, lunging forward as the monitor alarm shifted to a shrieking red emergency tone.
Dr. Park and a team of specialists burst through the double doors, immediately swarming the bed with defibrillators and emergency trays. Callum stood frozen in the middle of the chaos, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists as he watched his father disappear behind a wall of medical professionals. Audrey stepped directly into his line of sight, placing both hands gently on his upper arms to anchor him.
“Callum,” she said firmly, using his first name for the second time.
His dark eyes snapped up, locking onto hers with a desperate vulnerability that stripped away every layer of his mobster persona.
“Let us do our jobs,” she pleaded softly.
For one agonizing second, the man whom half the city feared looked like a helpless child watching his entire world crumble. Then, slowly, Callum took a step backward, releasing control into her hands.

“Save him,” he whispered.
“We’re trying,” Audrey replied, turning instantly back to the frantic resuscitation effort.
