Chapter 7 - A New Beginning

Three months passed.
The changing of the seasons brought a beautiful autumn to the Brooks estate.
The golden leaves fell softly across the expansive lawns, matching the peace that had finally settled into my heart.
My physical recovery had been swift, supported by the best medical care available.
But my emotional recovery was the true victory.
I spent my days with Leo, watching him grow, listening to his soft coos and bright laughter.
He was a happy, healthy baby, completely unaware of the storm that had raged in the weeks following his birth.
My father had transformed as well.
The ruthless titan of industry was suddenly a man who left board meetings early just to read a storybook to his grandson.
He had protected me, but he had also respected my space to heal.
One morning, as I sat in the sunroom drinking coffee while Leo played on his mat, my father walked in.
He held a thick folder in his hands.
“I have some news, if you’re ready to hear it,” he said gently.
“I’m ready,” I smiled, motioning for him to sit across from me.
“The divorce proceedings are moving smoothly,” he began.
“Dominic’s lawyers have completely surrendered. He has no capital to fight with.”
“He is asking for nothing. No alimony, no assets.”
“What about custody?” I asked, a slight tension creeping into my shoulders.
“He waived his rights,” my father said quietly.
“I suspect he realizes he has nothing to offer the boy, and frankly, I think he is too ashamed to face you in court.”
I let out a long breath, feeling a massive weight lift off my chest.
Leo was mine. Completely and legally safe.
“There’s one more thing,” my father said, tapping the folder.
“I want you to take an executive position at Brooks Global.”
I blinked in surprise. “Dad... I don't know if I’m ready for that.”
“You are,” he insisted, his eyes shining with pride.
“For two years, you managed a household, dealt with a narcissistic family, and supported a difficult man.”
“You have my blood, Audrey. You are smart, resilient, and you take no nonsense.”
“I want you to head the philanthropic division. Start making a real difference in the world.”
I looked down at Leo, who was happily chewing on a plush toy.
I didn't want to hide anymore.
I didn't want to pretend to be small just to make a man feel big.
I wanted to be Audrey Brooks.

I looked back up at my father and smiled.
“I’d love that, Dad. When do I start?”
