Chapter 8 - The Final Severance

The day the divorce was finalized, it rained.

It was a cold, driving rain that washed the streets of Manhattan clean.

I sat in the back of my chauffeured car, watching the city pass by through the tinted windows.

I held the signed legal documents in my lap.

It was over.

I was completely free.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from an unknown number, but I knew exactly who it was.

I signed the papers. I’m sorry, Audrey. I hope you and Leo have a good life.

I didn’t reply.

I simply blocked the number and slipped the phone back into my designer bag.

Forgiveness was something I would work on for my own peace of mind, but Dominic no longer warranted a response.

I had read in the business columns that Apex Tech had been dissolved and sold for scrap.

Dominic was currently working as a mid-level manager at a logistics firm.

He took the subway to work every day.

The universe had a sense of poetic justice.

The car pulled up to the towering glass headquarters of Brooks Global.

Mr. Vance opened the door for me, holding a large umbrella to shield me from the rain.

“Good morning, Ms. Brooks,” he said warmly.

“Good morning, Mr. Vance,” I replied, stepping out into the brisk air.

I was dressed in a sharp, tailored suit.

My head was held high.

As I walked through the revolving doors into the massive lobby, employees nodded respectfully in my direction.

I wasn’t a hidden wife anymore.

I was the future of the company.

I rode the elevator up to the executive floor, feeling a profound sense of purpose.

I had a son who loved me, a father who championed me, and a future that belonged entirely to me.

Dominic had told me not to make things harder than they needed to be.

He was right.

Leaving him was the easiest thing I had ever done.

And stepping into my true power was exactly where I was always meant to be.
