Chapter 2 - The Breaking Point

The kitchen wall felt like a tombstone against my back. Daniel was shouting, his face a contorted mask of rage fueled by one of Vanessa’s "anonymous" tips. He claimed I had hired a private investigator to dig into his offshore accounts. The truth was, I didn't need a investigator; I already had the access codes. The impact sent a framed photo of our wedding day crashing to the floor, the glass shattering like my sanity. My lip split, the copper taste of blood filling my mouth—a sickeningly familiar sensation.

"You’re useless without me," he snarled, his grip tightening around my wrist until I felt the bones protest. Vanessa stood by the island, sipping a vintage red, her eyes filled with a predatory glee. She looked at me not as a person, but as an obstacle to be discarded. "She still thinks her father will rescue her," she chimed in, her voice like liquid poison. Daniel laughed, a hollow, cruel sound that died when I looked at them—really looked at them—with a calm that clearly unnerved them.

I didn't argue. I didn't cry. I simply turned and walked toward the sanctuary of the bathroom, locking the door behind me. My hands shook, but not from fear—from the cold, sharp focus of survival. I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed the number I had vowed never to use. My father picked up on the first ring, as if he had been waiting by the phone for three years. "Dad," I whispered, my voice cracked and stained with blood, "you were right about him."

There was a heavy, pregnant silence on the other end, the kind that spoke of years of worry and regret. Then, his voice came through—low, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "Are you alone?" he asked. "For the moment," I replied. "Open the back door in three minutes. Bring nothing but yourself," he commanded. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. Behind the bruising, the exhaustion, and the fear, I saw a spark of the woman who had built that empire from nothing. I wasn't useless. I was just patient.
