Chapter 6 - The Settlement

The boardroom at Hale Meridian headquarters was cold, the air thick with the smell of expensive coffee and artificial calm. Daniel sat at the head of the table, wearing the watch I had bought him for our third anniversary—a gift that now felt like a taunt. Vanessa sat beside him, dressed in white, her smile thin and triumphant. She clearly expected me to walk in broken, defeated, and ready to sign whatever scrap of paper they put in front of me.

When I entered the room, I wasn't the woman I had been two weeks ago. My hair was pulled back, my suit was sharp enough to cut, and my eyes were clear. I didn't look at Daniel; I looked at the folder in front of his attorney. "You're late," Daniel sneered, his arrogance momentarily masking his fear. "I was busy," I said, my voice steady, echoing off the mahogany walls. "You know how it is when you're managing an empire."

Vanessa laughed. "Still playing the executive, Evelyn? It’s over. Sign the papers, or we’ll make sure the public hears every dirty secret you’ve been hiding." She gestured toward a stack of documents—a manufactured narrative of my "instability" and "incompetence." I took my seat, placing my own folder on the table. It was thin, but it held the weight of a thousand storms. The silence in the room stretched, heavy and suffocating, as I opened the folder and pushed it toward them.

"I’m not here to sign your settlement," I said, my voice ringing out clearly. "I’m here to tell you that you’ve been audited." Daniel frowned, his brow furrowing as he looked at the first page. It was a summary of the offshore transfers—the nine million dollars that had disappeared. His face went gray. Vanessa leaned over to look, her smile faltering, then vanishing entirely. "What is this?" she whispered. "That," I replied, "is the beginning of the end of your life."
