Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

Daniel and Tyler didn’t wait for the police to call them back.
They got into Daniel’s car and drove the forty miles to Lexington, breaking every speed limit along the way.
When they pulled into the upscale suburban driveway, the red pickup truck was gleaming in the driveway, freshly washed.
Through the large bay window, they could see Laura sitting on her brand-new, expensive leather sofa, sipping coffee.
Daniel marched up to the front door and pounded on it with a closed fist.
Brian opened it, wearing a smug smile that instantly vanished when he saw the two brothers standing there.
“Daniel? Tyler? What are you guys—”
Tyler didn’t let him finish.
He surged forward, shoving Brian backward into the house. Brian stumbled and crashed into an entryway table, knocking a vase to the floor where it shattered.
“Hey! What the hell is your problem?!” Brian shouted, scrambling to his feet.
Laura shrieked, dropping her coffee mug. “Daniel! Tyler! Have you gone crazy?!”
Daniel walked into the living room, his boots tracking mud onto the pristine, expensive rugs.
He looked at his sister.
He looked at the new furniture. The new TV.
“We found her, Laura,” Daniel said, his voice eerily calm.
Laura froze. The color instantly drained from her face.
She looked like a ghost.
“We found Mom,” Tyler added, stepping closer to Brian. “At the bottom of the quarry.”
Brian’s eyes darted frantically toward the back door. He took a step backward, raising his hands.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. She asked me to drop her at the bus station!”
“She’s alive, Brian,” Daniel said.
Those three words hit Brian like a physical blow. His knees buckled slightly.
“She’s alive, and she’s awake,” Daniel continued, taking a step toward his sister. “And she told us everything. About the papers. About the cliff. About you stepping back and watching her fall.”
Laura collapsed onto her knees, weeping hysterically, clutching at Daniel’s pant leg.
“I didn’t know! Daniel, I swear on my life I didn’t know he hurt her! He told me she signed the money over to us! He told me she went home!”
Daniel looked down at his sister with absolute disgust.
“You drained her bank account, Laura. You stole her life savings, and when she went missing for three days, you posted pictures of a couch. You knew she was gone, and you didn't care as long as the check cleared.”
Sirens began to wail in the distance.
The sound grew louder, echoing through the quiet suburban streets.
Brian panicked. He bolted for the back door, trying to make a run for the yard.
Tyler was faster.
He tackled Brian to the hardwood floor, pinning him down with a heavy knee to the back. Brian thrashed and cursed, but Tyler held him down with the strength of a man fueled by pure, righteous fury.

A moment later, three police cruisers screeched to a halt on the front lawn.
State troopers poured into the house, their weapons drawn.
