Chapter 7 - Justice and Judgment

The arrests made front-page news across the entire county.

The town of Maple Ridge was shaken to its core.

Mrs. Helen was a beloved figure. When the details of the crime were leaked to the public, the community’s outrage was palpable.

People who had known Laura since she was a little girl in pigtails openly cursed her name in the grocery store aisles.

Brian was charged with first-degree attempted murder, elder abuse, kidnapping, and grand larceny.

Without the possibility of bail, he was sent straight to the county lockup.

Laura tried to play the victim, claiming she was manipulated and unaware of the physical violence.

But the financial records told a different story.

She was indicted for grand theft, fraud, and criminal negligence.

The trial, held four months later, was swift and brutal.

Mrs. Helen, still using a walker to support her healing rib and battered legs, took the witness stand.

The courtroom was completely silent as the gentle old woman recounted the night in the storm.

She looked directly at her daughter and her son-in-law as she spoke.

She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t hurl insults.

She simply told the truth.

“I would have given you the money, Laura,” Mrs. Helen said quietly into the microphone. “If you had just asked me, I would have given you everything I had. You didn’t have to throw me away.”

Laura sobbed uncontrollably, burying her face in her hands.

But it was too late for tears.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

Brian was sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison.

Laura was sentenced to eight years for her role in the financial crimes and her failure to report her mother missing.

As the bailiff led them away in handcuffs, Daniel and Tyler stood on either side of their mother, shielding her from the flashing cameras of the local press.

Justice had been served, but the family was forever broken.

The sister they thought they knew was gone, replaced by a stranger blinded by greed.

But as they walked out of the courthouse and into the bright afternoon sun, Daniel realized that the core of their family—the love that actually mattered—had survived.
