Chapter 10 - The Canvas of Forever

The sun began to dip below the Boston skyline, casting a golden, amber glow across the rooftop terrace of the brownstone. The art gallery below was finally quiet, the last of the guests having departed with smiles, warm memories, and arms full of children’s paintings.
Upstairs on the terrace, the evening breeze carried the faint scent of spring blossoms and city rain.
Rebecca stood by the glass railing, looking out over the twinkling lights of the city she now called home. Footsteps approached softly behind her, followed by the familiar warmth of a heavy wool jacket draped gently over her shoulders.
She turned to see James standing beside her, holding two mugs of hot chamomile tea.
“The girls finally fell asleep,” James said quietly, handing her a mug. “Clare insisted on sleeping with her paintbrush in her hand.”
Rebecca let out a soft, melodic laugh, taking the warm mug between her hands. “They’re happy, James. For the first time in their lives, they aren't afraid of the dark, and they aren't afraid of footsteps at the door.”
“Neither are you,” James noted, looking down at her with deep, unmasked affection.
Rebecca looked up, meeting his gaze. The fear that had defined her eyes when they first met on the cabin floor months ago was completely gone, replaced by a profound sense of peace and strength.
“No,” Rebecca whispered. “I’m not afraid anymore.”
James set his mug down on the patio table and reached out, gently taking Rebecca’s scarred, beautiful hands in his own.
“When I walked into that freezing cabin in the Massachusetts woods,” James said, his voice steady and full of emotion, “I thought I was escaping the world to find silence. I didn’t realize I was actually walking toward my real life.”
Tears glistened in Rebecca’s eyes, but this time they were tears of pure joy. “You saved us, James.”
May you like
“We saved each other,” James corrected gently.
He leaned down, and as their lips met in a soft, tender kiss under the evening stars, the heavy winter of their past finally melted away completely, leaving behind a canvas built on love, safety, and a forever they would write together.
