Chapter 3 - A Billionaire’s Stare Meets a Bully’s Wrath

The cold air hit James like a physical blow, but he didn’t flinch. He stood squarely in the doorway, blocking the entrance completely.
Standing on the porch was a man in his early thirties, dressed in an expensive designer winter coat that looked completely out of place in the rugged Massachusetts woods. His hair was slicked back, his eyes were bloodshot, and a sneer twisted his thin lips. He looked like the kind of man who inherited wealth without ever learning character—a predator who relied on intimidation to control everyone around him.
The man—Richard Vance—stopped dead in his tracks as the porch light flooded over James. He had clearly expected a frightened caretaker, an elderly hermit, or a scared tourist. Instead, he was staring at a towering, immaculately dressed man whose eyes held the chilling calm of a predator apex-level executive.
Richard blinked, his arrogant smirk faltering for a split second before returning with forced bravado. “Who the hell are you? Get out of my way. I’m taking my family back where they belong.”
“You aren't taking anyone anywhere,” James said. His voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the wind like a razor.
Richard scoffed, stepping closer and trying to shove past James’s shoulder. “Don’t play hero with me, old man. That woman inside stole from me. Those kids are mine. Move before I call the cops and have you arrested for harboring fugitives.”
James didn’t budge an inch. He felt like a granite pillar. When Richard tried to push him again, James caught the man’s wrist with a grip of iron. He twisted it just enough to make Richard gasp in pain and stumble backward.
“Listen to me very carefully, Richard,” James said, his voice dropping an octave. “You are standing on my property. You are threatening people under my roof. And if you take one more step toward this door, I won’t call the police. I’ll call my legal team, and by sunrise, every asset, every account, and every corporate privilege you possess will be frozen, seized, and liquidated before you can even figure out what hit you.”
Richard’s face twisted in rage and confusion. “You’re bluffing! Do you have any idea who my family is? My father is—”
“Your father is Arthur Vance,” James interrupted smoothly. “A man whose board of directors I bail out every three years because incompetent heirs like you run his subsidiaries into the ground. In fact, if I recall correctly, your personal trust fund requires my signature or the signature of three senior partners to release your monthly allowance. Am I wrong?”
Color drained completely from Richard’s face. The arrogant swagger evaporated, replaced by a sudden, creeping terror. He stared into James’s eyes, finally recognizing the face he had only ever seen in financial news profiles and boardroom summaries.
“J-James Carter?” Richard stammered, his voice cracking. “You... you own this cabin?”
“I own the land you’re standing on, the road you drove in on, and a controlling stake in the company your father built,” James said coldly. “Now, get back in your car, turn around, and drive off my mountain. If you ever come within five miles of Rebecca and those little girls again, I will personally destroy everything your family built.”

Richard trembled, glaring with pure hatred at the doorway behind James, where Rebecca’s terrified face peeked out from the shadow. Realizing he had completely miscalculated his target, Richard backed away toward his SUV, climbed inside, tires screeching violently on the frozen dirt as he peeled out into the night.
James watched the taillights disappear into the dark before turning back inside. Rebecca was standing by the fireplace, tears streaming down her face, looking at him as if he were a god who had just descended from the clouds.
