Chapter 5 - The Desperate Crawl and the Hidden Arsenal

As soon as the muffled sound of study drawers opening echoed from down the hall, I squeezed Evan’s hand twice—our old childhood game turned into a desperate tactical signal. Move now.

My limbs felt like lead pipes, heavy and unresponsive, but pure adrenaline flooded my bloodstream, overriding the lingering paralytic effects of the poison. I rolled clumsily onto my stomach, my muscles screaming in protest, every joint aching as if beaten with lead pipes.

“Mom…” Evan whimpered softly, his face pale and slick with cold sweat.

“Shh, baby, stay low, crawl behind me,” I rasped, my voice barely a dry whistle, but my eyes burned with fierce determination.

We crawled across the dining room floor like soldiers under enemy fire, keeping beneath the level of the windows to avoid being spotted if either Julian or Clara glanced back down the hall. The broken glass from my wine glass crunched beneath my knees, tiny shards piercing my skin, but I felt no pain—only the driving imperative to get my son away from this slaughterhouse.

We reached the kitchen pantry, its heavy wooden door standing slightly ajar. I pushed Evan inside, squeezing him into the tight space between the shelving units stacked with canned goods and flour bags.

“Stay right here,” I whispered fiercely, gripping his shoulders. “No matter what you hear, no matter who calls your name, do not make a sound. If I don't come back out, crawl through the small utility window at the back and run straight to Mrs. Higgins' house next door. Do you understand?”

Evan’s eyes filled with terrified tears, but he nodded bravely, pressing his small hands over his mouth to muffle his ragged breathing.

I closed the pantry door until it clicked softly into the latch, leaving just a hair-width crack for ventilation and light. Then, I turned my attention to the kitchen counter. Julian had left his laptop open, glowing softly in the dim light. Beside it sat his heavy leather briefcase, unzipped.

I scanned the kitchen for a weapon. Heavy ceramic plates, dull butter knives, wooden spoons—nothing that could stop a man fueled by greed and desperation. But as my eyes swept across the counter, I spotted something glinting beneath a pile of mail.

Julian’s heavy-duty hunting knife, with its six-inch serrated steel blade, which he claimed he had used for clearing brush on our last camping trip. He must have left it out after preparing the dinner ingredients.

My trembling fingers wrapped around the textured rubber handle. The cold steel felt empowering, a tangible anchor in a world that had just shattered into a million nightmarish pieces. I pulled the knife free just as the sound of slamming drawers echoed from the study.

“Julian! The safe is empty! The bearer bonds aren't in here!” Clara’s voice shrieked down the hallway, laced with sudden, genuine panic.

Julian let out a furious roar that shook the paintings on the wall. “What do you mean they’re not in there? They have to be!”

They were coming back. And this time, they wouldn't find our bodies on the floor.
