Chapter 7 - The Mask Slips and the Truth Comes Out

Julian ripped his hand away from his bleeding shoulder, staring at the bright red stain smeared across his fingers with a mixture of disbelief and savage fury. The polite, doting suburban husband was completely gone, replaced by a cornered animal desperate to survive at any cost.

“You ruined everything,” Julian snarled, his voice thick with venom as he took a slow, menacing step toward me. “We could have had a clean break. The insurance payout, the house, the accounts—everything was set up perfectly. But you just had to be stubborn, didn't you, Elena?”

“You were going to murder your own son, Julian,” I spat back, my voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in my ears, keeping myself planted firmly between him and the pantry where Evan was hiding. “You poisoned a ten-year-old child just to clear your debts and run away with a corporate thief!”

Clara recovered her composure quickly, her eyes darting frantically around the kitchen for a weapon before settling on a heavy iron skillet sitting on the stove. She snatched it up, her knuckles whitening around the handle.

“Don't listen to her, Julian! She’s just buying time for the cops—if she managed to call them before she collapsed,” Clara hissed, stepping out from the pantry threshold. “Kill her now, or we’re both going to spend the rest of our lives behind bars!”

Julian lunged forward with sudden, desperate speed, ignoring the searing pain in his wounded shoulder. He lunged straight for my throat, his hands outstretched like claws.

I ducked beneath his wild swing, bringing the heavy hunting knife up in a defensive arc that sliced across his forearm, drawing another sharp cry of pain from his lips. But Julian was heavier and stronger than me, and as I stumbled back against the kitchen counter, he slammed his weight forward, pinning me against the edge.

The knife slipped from my numb fingers, clattering loudly against the tile floor just out of reach. Julian’s hands clamped around my wrists, crushing my bones together as he forced my arms backward, pressing his full body weight against my chest to suffocate me.

“Say goodbye, Elena,” Julian hissed into my ear, his breath hot and rancid with malice.

Through the haze of pain and lack of oxygen, I caught a sudden movement out of the corner of my eye. The pantry door swung wider. Evan stood in the dark doorway, his small hands gripped around a heavy cast-iron rolling pin he had pulled from the baking shelf.

Before Julian could realize what was happening, Evan charged out of the pantry with a battle cry that shattered the oppressive silence of the house, bringing the heavy wooden rolling pin down squarely across the back of Julian’s skull with a sickening thud.
