Chapter 10 - The Eviction of Gordon Pike

Gordon Pike’s face drained of every drop of color until he looked like a walking corpse.

“B-Bellacort?” Pike stammered, his knees wobbling beneath his cheap trousers. “The... the cold chain family?”

“You threatened Cassandra’s employment,” Thiago said, taking one slow, deliberate step toward him. “You threatened her family’s medical care. You attempted to extort four hundred dollars from her wages for a bill I settled in full.”

“Mr. Bellacort, please!” Pike pleaded, backing up until his spine hit the wooden bar counter. “I didn't know! If I had known who you were, I would never have spoken to you like that! I was just protecting the house!”

“You weren't protecting the house, Gordon,” Marcus Vance spoke up, stepping forward with the open audit folder. “You were protecting your own embezzlement scheme.”

Vance tossed the thick audit report onto the bar counter.

The papers fanned out, revealing highlighted banking transfers, altered terminal logs, and forged server payout receipts.

“For thirty-six months,” Vance continued, “you have systematically stolen an average of five hundred and twenty dollars per week from the staff gratuity pool. You logged server walkouts on valid cash transactions and pocketed the difference.”

Cassandra covered her mouth with both hands, tears of pure fury burning in her eyes.

All those nights she had gone home with forty dollars after twelve hours of backbreaking labor, wondering how she was going to buy groceries, Gordon Pike had been stealing her wages to fund his gambling debts.

“This is a lie!” Pike shrieked, his voice cracking into a shrill panic. “You forged this! You can’t prove anything!”

“The New York District Attorney’s financial crimes unit has already received the encrypted server mirrors,” Thiago said coldly. “There are two detectives waiting outside in an unmarked cruiser right now.”

Pike looked toward the front glass windows.

Through the glass, past the rain, sat a black sedan with two plainclothes officers watching the door.

Pike’s legs completely gave out.

He sank to the floor, grabbing the edge of the bar stool to keep from collapsing entirely.

“Please, Mr. Bellacort,” Pike whimpered, tears of pathetic self-pity streaming down his sweaty cheeks. “I have debts. I have people looking for me. Don't ruin me!”

“You ruined yourself the moment you preyed on someone who had no way to fight back,” Thiago said.

Thiago turned his back on Pike, dismissing the man entirely.

“Vance. Escort Mr. Pike outside to the detectives. Have the locksmiths change the operational safe codes immediately.”

“Right away, Mr. Bellacort.”

Two security officers hoisted Gordon Pike by his armpits and dragged him toward the door.

His frantic apologies and sobbing pleas echoed through the restaurant until the heavy glass doors swung shut behind him.

Silence descended over Marino’s Table.

The kitchen staff remained frozen in the hallway, staring in disbelief at the sudden liberation of their workplace.

Cassie stood alone in the center of the aisle, clutching her order pad to her chest.

Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Thiago Bellacort—the man she had wiped clean with a bar towel, the man she had offered a twenty-dollar ride home, the man who had sat in her father’s tiny living room drinking cheap instant coffee—was one of the wealthiest and most feared men in the state.

Thiago walked toward her, stopping two paces away.

The lethal hardness in his eyes melted away, replaced by an extraordinary, patient gentleness.

“Cassandra,” he said softly.

Cassie took a half-step back, suddenly hyper-aware of her worn apron, her unstyled hair, and the sheer gulf of status separating them.

“Why did you do this?” Cassie asked, her voice trembling with raw emotion. “Why lie to me? Why pretend you were someone else?”

“I didn't lie to you, Cassandra,” Thiago said, his deep voice vibrating in the quiet room. “I lied to Vanessa. To you, I showed the truth of who I am when the world takes away my armor.”

He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently covering hers over the order pad.

“Last night, you protected a man who had nothing,” Thiago whispered, holding her blue-gray gaze with unyielding devotion. “Today, that man has everything. And I will spend every dime I own making sure no one ever makes you feel powerless again.”

Cassie looked up into his dark brown eyes, the platinum hair framing his sculpted face, and felt the entire foundation of her difficult, lonely life shift beneath her feet.

Before she could speak, Thiago’s satellite phone buzzed once in his jacket pocket.

He pulled it out and checked the encrypted notification.

It was an alert from the corporate closing desk.
