Chapter 9 - The Inspection of Marino’s Table

At three forty-five that afternoon, Marino’s Table was preparing for the dinner rush.
Gordon Pike stood behind the bar, screaming at a young busboy for failing to polish the silverware correctly.
His tie was crooked, his collar damp with sweat.
The morning had been a nightmare.
The bank had frozen the restaurant’s operational line of credit without warning.
A formal legal courier had delivered a certified letter stating that the entire property, including the fixtures and liquor license, had been transferred to a private equity firm called Vanguard Cold Logistics.
Pike knew nothing about private equity.
He only knew that an executive board representative was arriving to inspect the premises.
Cassandra walked in through the front doors, wearing her freshly ironed burgundy apron.
Her eyes were swollen with fatigue, but she held her head high.
She had already deposited Thiago’s generous tip into her bank account and paid the minimum fee to keep her father’s oxygen service running for another seven days.
The moment Pike saw her, his face twisted in rage.
“You,” Pike spat, storming around the bar toward her. “You have the nerve to show your face here after last night?”
Cassie stood her ground. “I’m scheduled for the four-to-close shift, Mr. Pike.”
“You’re scheduled for the street!” Pike yelled, slamming his hand against the hostess counter. “I told you last night! You’re done! Turn in your apron, grab your coat, and get the hell out before I call the precinct!”
Several kitchen staff poked their heads through the double doors, watching the confrontation.
“You haven't issued my final paycheck,” Cassie said, her voice trembling but resolute. “State law requires immediate settlement if you terminate without cause.”
“You cost this house four hundred dollars in damages!” Pike shouted. “Your little boyfriend with the scam card almost broke my POS terminal! I don't owe you a single red cent!”
“He paid the bill, Mr. Pike,” Cassie countered. “The receipt cleared. You took the money.”
“Get out!” Pike roared, raising his hand toward her shoulder to physically shove her toward the exit.
Before his fingers could touch Cassie’s apron, the heavy glass doors of Marino’s Table swung open.
A tall, immaculate man in an Italian wool overcoat stepped inside.
It was Marcus Vance.
Behind him stood two private security officers in tailored dark suits with earpieces curled behind their collars.
The air in the dining room dropped ten degrees.
Pike froze, his hand suspended in mid-air.
He pulled his arm back quickly, wiping his sweaty palms against his trousers.
“Can I... can I help you gentlemen?” Pike stammered, his arrogant bravado evaporating instantly. “We don't open for dinner until five.”
Vance did not answer.
He stepped aside and held the door open with practiced deference.
A massive figure stepped through the threshold.
He wore a Brioni charcoal suit that accentuated his broad, powerful frame.
His striking platinum-white hair caught the dining room chandeliers.
His dark brown eyes cut through the room like twin searchlights.
Cassandra gasped, her order pad slipping from her fingers and fluttering to the floor.
She stared at the man.
The jawline was identical.
The towering height was identical.
The unyielding, terrifying presence was identical.
Yet the faded flannel, the scuffed boots, and the humble mechanic’s posture were completely gone.
Thiago Bellacort stood in the center of the dining room like a king inspecting a conquered province.
Gordon Pike blinked stupidly, looking from Thiago’s platinum hair down to his hand-stitched leather shoes.
He didn't recognize the man without the soaked clothes.
“Are you the representative from Vanguard Cold Logistics?” Pike asked nervously, extending a trembling hand.
Thiago did not look at Pike’s hand.
He looked straight past the manager, his eyes locking onto Cassandra.
He saw the fear and astonishment in her blue-gray eyes.
He saw her hand-tied chestnut hair and the clean apron she wore like armor.
Thiago stepped past Pike as if the manager were made of smoke.
He knelt down smoothly on one knee, picked up Cassandra’s fallen order pad from the floor, and rose to his full height.
He handed the pad back into her shaking hands.
“Good afternoon, Cassandra,” Thiago said, his deep voice filling the silent dining room.
Cassie’s lips parted, her voice barely a whisper.
“Thiago...?”
Gordon Pike stared between the two of them, his mouth hanging open like a broken hinge.
“Wait... what?” Pike stammered, pointing a crooked finger at Thiago. “You... you’re the guy from last night? The mechanic?”
Thiago slowly turned around.
May you like
His expression was utterly devoid of mercy.
“My name is Thiago Bellacort,” he said, his voice dropping into that chilling, lethal cadence that commanded boardrooms and docks alike. “And as of eight o'clock this morning, Mr. Pike, I own every brick, every glass, and every contract in this building.”
