Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

While Nathan and Daniel systematically dismantled Grant’s financial empire in the library, Cole Mercer’s private medical transport was speeding through the rain-slicked streets of the city toward the Mercer Specialized Medical Center. Inside the state-of-the-art ambulance, Cole sat beside Evelyn, holding her hand while a team of specialized obstetricians conducted a full ultrasound. The monitor hummed softly, showing the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of Evelyn’s unborn baby girl. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

Cole let out a deep breath he felt like he’d been holding since he got the emergency alert. “Heartbeat is strong,” the chief obstetrician announced with a warm, reassuring smile. “No signs of placental abruption. The baby is safe, Mrs. Holloway.” “Thank you, Doctor,” Evelyn whispered, tears finally welling up in her eyes as she stared at the screen. She squeezed Cole’s hand. “She’s safe, Evie,” Cole said softly, wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. “You did it. You protected her.”

Evelyn closed her eyes, letting the physical and emotional exhaustion wash over her. For six years, she had lived in the gilded cage of Holloway House. When she first married Grant, she believed he was a ambitious, loving man who simply wanted to build a legacy. But as the years went on, Grant’s ambition turned into toxicity, fueled by his deep-seated insecurity over the Mercer family's immense wealth and power. Grant wanted a trophy wife he could control—someone whose silent background presence would elevate his social standing without ever outshining him. When Evelyn discovered she was pregnant, she had hoped it would change him. Instead, it made him more desperate. His reckless investments began to crumble, and he saw Evelyn not as his partner, but as his ultimate financial escape hatch.

“Why didn't you tell us sooner, Evie?” Cole asked gently, his voice laced with faint guilt. “Why did you suffer alone in that house for so long?” Evelyn opened her eyes, looking at her brother. “Because I wanted to be sure,” Evelyn said quietly. “If I came to you or Nathan three years ago, you would have destroyed him immediately. But I wanted to give my marriage every possible chance. I wanted to see if Grant had any humanity left.” She looked down at the dark bruise on her left arm. “Tonight, I got my answer. He didn't just want my money, Cole. He wanted to break me so completely that I would never speak up again.”

“He will never touch you again,” Cole promised, his voice cold and absolute. “I’ve already arranged for a full medical evaluation report to be sent directly to the police chief and the presiding judge. The physical evidence, combined with Daniel’s recordings, guarantees he will not receive bail.” Evelyn took a deep breath, feeling the soft stirrings of her baby girl inside her. “What about Celeste?” Evelyn asked. “Daniel’s team traced her accounts,” Cole replied. “She wasn't just Grant’s mistress. She was an operative working for a rival private equity group in London. She was feeding Grant bad financial advice to force Holloway Hospitality into default so her group could buy the assets for pennies on the dollar.” Evelyn let out a bitter laugh. “So Grant was being played by his mistress while trying to play me.” “Poetic justice,” Cole said smoothly. “She’s currently being detained by federal agents for corporate espionage and money laundering.”

The ambulance pulled into the private underground bay of the Mercer Medical Center. A team of top nurses and security officers waited at the entrance. As Evelyn was wheeled into the private luxury suite on the top floor, her phone vibrated on the bedside table. It was a text from Nathan. “It’s done. Holloway House is sealed by law enforcement. Grant is in handcuffs. Rest now, little sister. The world belongs to you again.”

Evelyn set the phone down and looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing city skyline. For the first time in six years, she felt she could breathe. The storm was over, but the rebuilding was just about to begin.
